Plastering walls advice needed please

Hello everyone,
Our house is on a busy road and near a speed bump which, unfortunately, large vehicles don’t slow down for. This causes our house to shake. We had rooms replastered and painted in the last two years which already have cracks in them. It definitely isn’t a structural issue as we’ve actually had a structural engineer out for a different reason. It’s just the damn lorries flying over the speed bump which is literally outside our house.

Is there a specific type of plastering which has some ‘stretch’ in it and would prove helpful? Is there a technique I could request?

Thanks in advance.

This is an interesting one. Whilst new plaster can be a little fragile for a short while, I wouldn't expect traffic outside to be causing this sort of issue. I bow to your structural engineer though.

I would potentially get on to the highways authority to see if they can look into other traffic calming measures.

As far as the plaster goes, dig out the cracks a little and fill, and monitor over time keeping a record of what is happening in order to provide evidence to the highways authority.

I don't know about any type of plaster with flex in it. I've never heard of such a thing if it does exist.

Good luck, please keep us posted.

Don't know, but for sealant you can get different types, so the stuff you use in bathrooms is more stretchy and waterproof (silicone) whereas decorators caulk you might use to seal a skirting board is harder and less flexible. I suspect you can get different fillers too.

I have filled some ceiling cracks recently with some runny wall repair filler (runny so it goes right into the gap) that was very easy to sand down and is the same colour as the sealing and am waiting to see whether they open up again.
