Weight gain over 40 years

I am 58 and I weigh 34lbs more than I did when I was 18.
That's an annual weight gain of 0.85 lb a year over the 40 years.
To put on 1lb, you need to overeat by 3500 calories, so I have over eaten by 2,975 calories every year.
That's 8 calories a day, which is one jelly tot.

I don't even eat jelly tots.

The jelly tots were hidden in your morning coffee?

AndWordsWhen · 20/10/2023 10:21

I don't drink coffee either...
But it's a good question - who has been hiding a jelly tot in my food everyday?

You say over eaten OP, but that is to suggest your weight at 58 should be the same as at 18 and that can’t be normal, unless you’re a ballerina or marathon runner.

There are now going to be posts from people saying they are exactly the same weight as they were when they were 18. (I'm not one, I'm fat and greedy and am 5 stone heavier than I was at 18)

BishyBarnyBee · 20/10/2023 10:48

It doesn't work like that though. If you ate one extra jelly tot, you'd easily work it off with an extra few minutes exercise the next day. That's the skill that life time healthy weight maintainers have learned, either instinctively or through their own efforts/learning from their mistakes.

The rest of us have regularly eaten more than our body needed and allowed our weight to drift up over the years. For most of us, there will have been periods of control and weight loss or stability, and periods of giving up completely and eating what the hell we like.

Can you honestly say you have never eaten more than a jelly tot past knowing you had eaten enough?

Of course not. I love a good dinner.
This is just about averages. Across 40 years, on average I have over eaten by one jelly tot a day.

And just in case anybody misunderstood the tone of my post, it was aimed mainly at jelly tot eaters to warn them of the danger.

People don't always gain weight through over eating though. If you become hypothyroid you will start gaining due to your metabolism slowing down, you can even eat less and still gain weight.

But yes, the danger of jelly tots is ever present. 😅

Sonolanona · 20/10/2023 11:19

I don't know what I weighed at 18, but at 22 on my wedding day I was 9 stone 2 (for some reason I recorded that in my diary like Bridget Jones Grin)

I'm 55 now and 9 stone 4, after 4 kids. BUT what I could eat at 22 and what I can eat at 55 is very different! More salad and a lot less pizza ! However that's not so much in order to stay slim but in order to stay healthy as I have arthritis and while I walk miles with the dog, any higher impact exercise justs causes pain.

And I love Jelly Tots (but Sherbert Pips are my nemasis... my kids get me a 2kg shop jar every Xmas and birthday!!)

ReturnOfTheRainMac · 20/10/2023 18:43

That's what you get for not eating jelly tots!

Honestly, I don't think that's bad at all. You can easily turn that around.

If it helps, I've really struggled as I've got older and have gained around 34kg in the last 12 years.

ReturnOfTheRainMac · 20/10/2023 18:43

To clarify, I wasn't 18 12 years ago but that's when I started counting.

bellac11 · 20/10/2023 18:57

But jelly tots are not what they used to be. I miss proper jelly tots

AndWordsWhen · 21/10/2023 15:44

I like the new big fat jelly tots.

Or want to look like a hardened, dried up twig... a look which some women do seem to aspire towards.

Tlolljs · 21/10/2023 16:04

Out of interest what about clothing sizes?
I remember my mum being a 18/20 when I a teen, now when I look back at pics she looks slim.

Makethemostofit · 21/10/2023 16:07

I am enjoying your number crunching OP.

Quite honestly I would love to look like that

I look like mashed up banana

Bit harsh!
Also not everyone was slim at 18...!

DramaAlpaca · 21/10/2023 20:33

I love jelly tots...

<misses the point totally>

lljkk · 21/10/2023 20:54

I weighed more at 18yo than I do now (almost same age as OP).
Am I jelly tot deprived? 🍬 🍬 🍬

toadasoda · 21/10/2023 20:59

I'm one of those 'I can still fit into my wedding dress' people.

My wedding dress was size 16.

At 40 I was a size 12. At 46 I'm fitting my wedding dress again. That's a lot of jelly tots
