Power cut prep?

I'm at work and we've had 3 power cuts already! DH is at home, what should he do in case of power cuts? On my list is:

  • find torch and spare batteries
/ keep phones charged
  • fill a dflask with hot water

What else?

If you have a gas hob then ensure you have matches or a lighter to light it with.

Power banks.
If you're cooking with electric get a cheap camping stove and gas. A small camping kettle to go on top. You probably have small pans already you can use.
Rechargeable torches/lanterns many can be used as power banks as well. Rechargeable head torches are best for doing things in a power cut.
Coming into the winter always have at least one alternative as a heat source.

We lose mobile signal during power cuts... make you sure you have alternative entertainment (and maybe a radio for news)

I’d think your way through a typical day, identify where you use electricity, and decide if you can put a mitigation in for that. I’d also get your partner to do the same because (a) he is a functioning adult, and (b) his day may be different to yours.

alarm clock: power bank for phone.
coffee: hot water in a flask, back up means of heating water.
breakfast: how will you cook? Matches for gas? Log burner?
light: torches and batteries
heating system: warm clothes, possibly hot water bottles (see hot water for coffee, above). Extra blankets.
electric car? Make sure it is fully charged.
tv: download films onto laptop/ iPad (see power bank for phone, above)
internet: make sure everything you need for work/ entertainment is downloaded before the power goes.
food: plan to eat up anything in the fridge that will quickly go off. Check if you need to take anything out of the freezer.

Do you have any important medical equipment? If so, let the power companies know in case you need a generator.

Think about things NOT to do. Don’t put washing on if you can’t dry it. Don’t open the freezer door.

Then I’d put it all in a nice spreadsheet. I love spreadsheets.

Oh, and don’t be tempted to leave it until later. It’s much easier to find stuff by daylight than torchlight.

…so he has to do it. 😊

Definitely a power bank. And make sure it's charged!
