Theatre going - lost interest

I used to love the theatre whenever I could afford it but I just can’t be bothered any more. It feels like the themes of shows have become more and more miserable, actors more screamy and shouty and seats, harder and smaller. The evening drags and all I want is to curl up in bed under a nice cosy duvet in a flannelette nightie with a book or the TV.

Or maybe I’m just getting older.

The shows are becoming about the stars not the story now and they're modernising for the worse (looking at you Moulin Rouge).

I agree with you OP. I can't be bothered traipsing into central London any more. Especially with the trains being on strike left, right and centre!

Still love a good musical though, but prefer to go more locally or in the summer months when the days are longer.

I usually opt for the matinee, I can be home in time for dinner and watching tv or mumsnetting😀

I've been like that for a few years now. In my case, I think it was that I got out of the habit of going either to the theatre or the movies when I was overseas. Also, TV shows improved and staying home became much more attractive.

That said, I surprised myself recently by really enjoying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I usually find it annoying in movie form and wouldn't have paid to see it, but I won "golden tickets" (like from Willy Wonka's competition to see his chocolate factory). The seats were the best I have ever had at the theatre. Willy Wonka was not irritatingly zany; in fact, he was great. The set blew me away. I loved every second. Now I'm planning to see more shows.

So now I see it more like I see food. Sometimes I'll hanker after a particular food and then go off it completely for a while. Maybe it's the same with everything. Our brains need a new challenge once in a while!

I’d go for certain shows but generally as I’m not in London much apart from the odd day for work then I’m not interested for reasons in OP.

I think you're just choosing the wrong shows at the wrong times. I can't be bothered with anything that I am going to have to think about, and I dislike musicals as a rule. I also dislike most comedians especially those which think it is clever to base their whole performance around swearing We nearly always choose a matinee, and only go to things we really want to see. I've given up going to anything 'thought-provoking ' or 'critically acclaimed'.
