Supposed to take moviprep but I can’t stomach it

I’m aware I have food issues and I’m supposed to drink a litre of this tonight and another tomorrow morning for a colonoscopy tomorrow afternoon. But I just can’t. I’ve managed two mouthfuls and that nearly made me throw up

I now cannot go near it or even smell it without my stomach turning.

I’ll stay fasting cos I still have an endoscopy as well tomorrow, but is there any chance the colonoscopy can still go ahead? I’ll have to explain to the doctors I know and I’m sure they won’t be impressed but I just can’t do it

@enchantedsquirrelwood I have a friend who was a nurse in the GI department. They sent people home all the time for bad prep. There’s just no point doing it.

Ting20161987 · 19/10/2023 20:31

I have had to drink this twice on two separate occasions. One for a colonoscopy and one for an endoscopy. They won't do the endoscopy either I would guess

Soubriquet · 19/10/2023 20:36

I’ll give them a ring in the morning as my appointment isn’t until 3.15 but I’m guessing they will go ahead with endoscopy as I didn’t need anything last time. They might have to rearrange the colonoscopy though

You're being so casual about this OP ... you ringing them to cancel tomorrow is going to mean a wasted appointment (they won't be able to fill it at short notice).

I get that it's awful. But steadily drinking it will avoid you throwing it up (you'll still absorb it sufficiently even if you do, if it's paced).

You clearly need this appointment so I'd really encourage you to persist (if it's not too late with your appointment now).

Good luck!

Soubriquet · 19/10/2023 20:48

I’ve thrown the whole stuff up which is why I’m being flippant. There is nothing left! And I don’t want to waste an appointment. I’ve spent two weeks with almost constant heartburn due to not taking my medications

I really feel for you, I had a colonoscopy last month and the prep was awful! I used really cold water, a straw and mixed it with cordial, I also held my nose as I drank it. I was gagging a lot, but managed to drink it all and I was completely empty when they did the procedure.

12345mummy · 19/10/2023 20:57

You have my sympathies OP, MoviPrep is horrible. It’s the extreme saltiness that they try and disguise with lemon and lime that makes it so vile. Hope you get sorted x

It's interesting so many people are saying they would not do it if you haven't cleared yourself out correctly. My mum recently had a colonoscopy and she always follows rules about this sort of thing to the letter. But I can imagine loads of people don't. Do they really turn these people away?

I had a Colonoscopy. I've had gastric surgery & physically couldn't get all the Moviprep in. They did the Colonoscopy anyway & gave me grief about bowel not being empty. They couldn't see properly but 'won't do another'. So, they prob won't turn you away, but you won't get a useful Colonoscopy result.

Physiologicalmalfunction · 19/10/2023 21:45

The last time I had a colonoscopy I drank pint (or whatever it was), then I threw up the second pint.

I still had loads of clear liquid coming out of me though and they did the colonoscopy just fine and I was squeaky clean. Some people must be more sensitive to the chemicals?

So if you start expelling liquid (as you may have ingested a little of the prep), maybe you'll be clear enough for it to go ahead

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 19/10/2023 21:53

I had a colonoscopy without taking the prep as it made me vomit for hours every time I drank it.
The time I didn’t take it I fasted for longer than required and the procedure was completed fully.
The other times it went shess despite it not being in my system but there was a small bit they couldn’t see.
Ring the department and speak to them.
There is an alternative prep but ilI can’t remember the name.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 19/10/2023 22:22

I had my colonoscopy on the third attempt. So humiliating. I drank that filthy Moviprep as directed and the first procedure was abandoned half-way through for obvious reasons. The second time I admitted I still wasn’t passing clear liquid and was sent home. After the first session with the Moviprep I found some really strong orange squash which made a world of difference. It was still bloody disgusting but I got it down.

I dunno if it was the particular clinic I attended but everyone treated with kindness and respect even though I felt a complete failure

Mochacino · 19/10/2023 22:28

It’s vile but they need a clear view to see what is going on as high up as they can. My last lot I made into ice pops with lemonade. Still rank but I managed it as a pop and or slushie style

thenightsky · 19/10/2023 22:35

Well they won't be able to get anyone at short notice anyway as I don't think anyone would want to drink that vile stuff a day before on the off chance they get a cancellation.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 19/10/2023 22:37

My sympathies, OP. I took Moviprep 3 years ago but this year had to have another lot and couldn't tolerate it and I am quite tough(I think it must have slightly different ingredients since last time I took it). You can ask the endo unit for a different prep. I had picolax years ago and I got on better with that. There are some other kinds, too, I think.

DilemmaDelilah · 20/10/2023 06:35

I do feel sorry for you. If they can't do the colonoscopy tomorrow perhaps they will reschedule? If so, ask if the can give you a different 'clearer outer'. I had a colonoscopy last week and was given Citrafleet rather than moviprep. It wasn't that bad at all. Small glasses of mildly lemon flavoured liquid. Not enjoyable but not horrible either. It may be that there are specific reasons for giving one rather than the other, but it would be worth asking I think.

Soubriquet · 20/10/2023 09:17

Spoken to the department today and they have rearranged my appointment. Going to send out a different medication for me. I’ve got to call back on Monday or Tuesday to discuss it more as they are going to send the email off to the consultant now, and will hopefully have heard back by then

@Soubriquet glad they were accommodating and hopefully the next lot of prep won't be quite so horrendous although will give the same results 😬

Good luck with the endoscopy 😕
