Hi my son is 8 and is autistic. He's also behinde at school he's in year 4 working at year 1 level. He has an EHCP He's recently become more awear that he's behinde his friends and that he struggles alot. It's effecting hom emotionally. He keeps saying he's dumb, stupid, rubbish etc. He gets upset and cries.

I have told him how fantastic he is. That he's great at swimming. And art. He has a lovely heart . He's so caring and loving.

Any suggestions on how I could help hom feel better about himself?

I don’t know what to suggest, but our autistic 9yo is exactly the same. I keep trying to get him to focus on the progress he’s made, but still compares himself to others.

My daughter was/is the same. She's 17 now, and caught up rapidly with her peers from about age 11. I had always asdumed she was a little less able, but it turns out she's very bright! A little more maturity always helps. Your son may be a late bloomer too 🙂

I'd suggest you encourage your son in all his interests, hobbies and talents. He sounds awesome, and there are plenty of things he does well that you can make a fuss of.

Does he like animals? If you haven’t got one, is a pet an option?

We have 2 dogs and a cat. He's fine with them but not overly interested.

Have a look on CBeebies or national autistic society or you tube for age appropriate videos thar helps explain autism but also talks about possible strengths.

I'm not sure if this would be quite right but there's a course online run by an Australian lady called Mind Ninja. It helps boost kids confidence in themselves. Maybe worth looking into?
