Anybody else have skin that just does NOT tan?

I've been on holiday for about a week and have obviously been exposed to the sun all during this time. I'm still white as a sheet though 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's so frustrating, DP & DS have tanned but I'm the same colour as when I left home. I'd have liked a bit of a glow but nothing so far.

Anybody else like this?

I never tan - my skin just doesn't have any melanin. I use gradual tan in summer, it doesn't make me look tanned, just less blueish.

RaraRachael · 19/10/2023 19:26

I've given up trying to tan. It doesn't matter which lotion or factor I use, I go red and then it fades away.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 19/10/2023 19:27

I don't tan either. If I were you I'd be under an umbrella and only be in the sun for a few minutes at a time.

As PP have said, I've a lot fewer lines than most people of my age.

I used to not tan at all then my skin suddenly changed in my 40’s and now I get a golden glow. I always think I’m really brown in the summer now but compared to other people I’m still really pale!

Sadly not tanning for so long hasn’t made me any less wrinkly though

Pushkinini · 19/10/2023 19:57

I'm another non tanner. I spent 3 weeks in Australia last year and came back a very similar colour how I went. Actually I was paler as I had a spray tan before I flew. I do have virtually no wrinkles though at 51 so there is some benefit for being pale.

PieonaBarm · 19/10/2023 20:17

I once had to take my holiday photos into work to prove I'd been away. I just embrace it now, I'm pale.

VictorBaucherOrSomething · 19/10/2023 21:43

This is me too OP. I would get comments off strangers on holiday about how white I was and it would really get me down. Now at 43 I take a very slight tan on my face and lower arms (but I still look whiter than most people before they even see any sun!)

hobbledyhoy · 19/10/2023 21:54

Yep same here, I'd need a six month holiday before I start to get a slightly less blue hue.
I try to embrace the pale and interesting look.

JadeSeahorse · 19/10/2023 22:03

Typical Irish colouring here, (as I have often been told.)
Dark hair, green eyes and very pale skin.

Factor 50 all the time whilst away, otherwise I burn terribly, but I am the only person I know who takes fake tan on holiday with them.😁

That's actually a good thing - no sun damage.

Not sure about that. I was constantly burnt as a child.

I am super pale too. Very annoying. Have to cover up all summer and wear factor 50 on every cm of exposed skin. If I miss a bit I burn. Have to wear scarves or hats or I burn my head. Also get sunstroke very easily.

I want to waft about in summer with gay abandon, bare foot, in light dresses with hair shimmering in the sunlight. Instead some days I can't be arsed to go out in it due to all the faff. And when I do I am sticky and/or covered up and/or slightly worried I've missed a bit or stayed out a bit too long for the sun cream.

toomanyleggings · 19/10/2023 22:06

It just seems to bounce off. I don’t even burn easily. It’s odd. Very white, translucent sort of skin. Even fake tan, I need tons of it on to change colour slightly

RedHelenB · 20/10/2023 05:32

Apparently you have to give it at least 2 weeks in the sun, a week isn't enough Worked for my dd who previously couldn't tan.

FinallyHere · 20/10/2023 06:05

Me

Pale skin and freckles. Sigh.

spanieleyes · 20/10/2023 06:11

I lived in Barbados for 18 months and came back vaguely pinkish! I usually come out in a rash or burn and so don't bother even trying now, factor 50 and a sun hat and " interestingly pale" for me.

Truthbomb · 20/10/2023 06:37

Me too. It’s been hard not to feel self conscious about it over the years. Each time I’ve been on holiday someone has remarked negatively about my skin colour. I had strangers shouting Casper at me, hotel staff mocking that I’d not changed colour the whole time etc.

Now I just accept it. What annoys me is people say ‘just sunbathe, you’ll get some colour’. I will not, and do not get colour and I never ever have. Occasionally I will get a spray tan if I want a glow or use a self tan at home during the summer which I think makes me look a bit healthier.

Hobbitfeet32 · 20/10/2023 07:13

Tanning means sun damage.

Chiaseedling · 20/10/2023 07:22

I used to tan abut when younger as I used factor 8 - no-one used a high factor then in the early 90s.
I burn v easily though and I use no less than 30 now so I only go slightly less pale 😆

Squirrelsnut · 20/10/2023 07:27

Me. I've never really cared and at 53 I look much younger (not delusional, I've been told many time by many people).
Embrace the ethereal look!

paisley256 · 20/10/2023 07:30

I used to go a lovely golden brown colour as a child but as an adult I go pink then fade back to very pale. Haven't a clue what that's about but my mum insists I'm doing something wrong!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 20/10/2023 07:35

Yeah I don't tan. My many, many freckles multiply. I'm not bothered, skin damage isn't something to aspire to. High factor sunscreen all the way.

VisaWoes · 20/10/2023 07:41

I don't tan.

Two weeks in Mexico = no tan, 5 weeks in Uganda = no tan, 2 weeks in Thailand = no tan. I am as white as a sheet of paper.
