Passport has 9 years left, but I’m getting married and changing my surname

We’re booking our next holiday (for next year). I don’t know what name to book it under - we get married next week, so I’ll have been my new surname for a year.

Can you change your name on your passport for free or is there a cost incurred?

For goodness sake, taratatata simply asked a question about passport details. She didn't ask for judgement or ridicule 🤷‍♀️.

Thank you so much. X

I'm baffled as to why women are still doing this in 2023 but as someone has said, as long as you are not doing it for fraudulent purposes you can use whatever name you like.

Be careful not to get in a muddle if you have different things in different names. At work a colleague wasn't able to fly as her PA had booked flights in the name she is known by at work having no idea she used a different name outside work and it was the latter on her passport...

Again, because they want to, you don’t need to be baffled and I’m sure there’s lots of people close to you who have and do do this. Each to their own.

Thank you to everyone who’s been helpful with my query! It wasn’t an invite to discuss my choice to change my name. We’re lucky we have the choice, tbh.

The only issue you’ll have is if you need to use your passport for ID - in my job, we have to renew our DBS every couple of years and have to have a passport. The names have to match.

Oddsocks55 · 19/10/2023 18:06

I got married a year after getting a new passport. Just had it renewed in my married name, 9 years later.

You have to pay like it is a new passport. I had 5 years left and got married in Feb

BashfulClam · 19/10/2023 19:26

I just travelled in my maiden name until i needed to update as I wasn’t throwing away £90. You have to apply for a full new passport to change your name. Legally you can use either your maiden name or married name interchangeably. Just book your tickets in your maiden name as the booking has to match your passport (also with all the delays in passport processing why bother with that headache).

I handed in my passport in previous name and marriage certificate to verify namd change and had no issues.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 19/10/2023 19:32

OP how much are you spending on the wedding?

A new passport is what, £100. Same as one guest's food for the day. Never mind how much you've spent on myriad unnecessary things for the wedding.

Just get a new passport.

DragonflyLady · 19/10/2023 19:49

Your original name is still your legal name so just leave everything in that. Your married name is just one you take out of courtesy so you could just be known as that without all the hassle and expense of changing documentation.

Moveoverdarlin · 19/10/2023 19:51

I was exactly the same as you OP. I changed my name on everything except my passport and booked holidays in my maiden name for 9 years. Been married 11 years now but have just got a passport in my ‘new’ name.

CrazyHamsterLady · 19/10/2023 19:55

I was too tight to pay for a new passport so just used my maiden name for about 4 years when booking holidays. When it finally expired, I got one in my married name. I felt it was a waste of money as we were still going on the same holiday 🤷‍♀️

Gcsunnyside23 · 19/10/2023 20:09

I had to get a new passport the month before I got married so no way was I paying to change it again so soon so I'm now 7 years in and might change it as keep forgetting.

Are you sure the form doesn't have a 'known by any other names' box.

I hold PVG (Scottish version) and just filled in also known as Sugar Full.
