Do You Celebrate Bonfire Night?

It was a big thing when I was a kid but I don’t do much now. We might have giant hotdogs, mugs of soup & some sparklers. Never have fireworks at home because of the bunnies but some years we might go to an organised display. It annoys me with fireworks as people around here start letting them off from Halloween onwards so we have to bring the bunnies in every night. Why not just celebrate on Nov 5th?

I know of organised displays on the 3rd, 4tj and 5th locally this year (Friday to Sunday). Then its Diwali on the 12th this year.

purpleme12 · 19/10/2023 14:29

Yes I do.
I love it.

My bunnies were never bothered by fireworks funnily enough

Pootles34 · 19/10/2023 14:54

We love bonfire night - we all get together and have a great big bonfire with sausages and parkin. Probably prefer it to Christmas - no pressure or spending!

KStockHERO · 19/10/2023 14:58

No, I absolutely hate everything about it.

Stinking bonfires that undoubtedly burn a few hundred hedgehogs to death each year.

Noisy, completely unnecessary fireworks set off by selfish tossers with no regard for other people's pets, wildlife or people with PTSD.

Just fuck off.

realitychequer · 19/10/2023 14:59

Local school are having their fireworks tomorrow night. Lunacy

purpleme12 · 19/10/2023 15:02

Wow that's early!!

SM4713 · 19/10/2023 15:11

No- don't do anything specific. IF there is a local firework display, DH and I 'might' go to see it, but otherwise- nothing.

I'm not British, and when I first here 20 years ago, I was looking forward to see a proper Guys Fawkes display. My local area in London at the time though- decided to do a themed story of a tiger set in India or Bangladesh! It had absolutely nothing to do with Guy Fawkes and was so disappointing. Never bothered much since.

Inextremis · 19/10/2023 15:25

Not usually, because we live in Ireland, and it's not a thing here (for fairly obvious reasons). However, this year I'm planning to ask a couple of friends round for a late Sunday roast, followed by sparklers on the patio - fireworks are not for sale here - as a sort of combined Halloween/Bonfire night celebration.

I'm really glad you can't get fireworks here - much as I love them, the dogs and other pets don't, nor do the horses, cows and sheep in the fields. When in the UK, I go to a big organised firework display, which is great - but I used to hate the fact that firework season seemed to last from October until the New Year!

MobHistory · 19/10/2023 15:45

Yes, only because it's my Birthday. And I share it with my thunder stealing daughter. 🙃

I live in the SE, there are organised displays and parades from 1st September until end of November nearly every week! So all the societies can go to each others

Caipirovska · 19/10/2023 15:55

yes - we went to organised displays till they weren't easy to get to and then we got own pets - then started doing food cooked over firepit sparklers and small fountains and fire crackers in garden. The home garden has benefit of not traveling and standing round in dark and cold.

Once kids leave home don't think we'll bother but then don't think we'd do Halloween much either.

I do wish New Year had fewer fireworks - didn't seem to be a thing when I was a kid - and fireworks were less spread out round 5th November.

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 19/10/2023 15:55

Yes. I love Bonfire Night.

I think the sale of fireworks to the public should be banned, and they should be sold only to licensed displays undertaken by competent people.

InDubiousBattle · 19/10/2023 15:58

Yes, our village has an organised fireworks display every year that's really good. We have pie & peas, plot toffee and parkin. Where I live there are usually displays and bonfires on the weekend nearest the 5th but nothing ridiculously early or late.

AlltheFs · 19/10/2023 16:00

We go to a local display that is for charity and has a few fun fair rides. We have hotdogs etc. It’s a really nice event to go to.

It’s just for one night though, I hate the weeks and weeks of fireworks. Unnecessary.

Our kittens will be old enough to go out soon but I am putting it off due to the fireworks fear-and we are rural.

Alainlechat · 19/10/2023 17:54

Yes we always had a party growing up and we are having one this year on 4th after a pause during covid.

When I was a kid one of our mates used to go up to Belfast and bring fireworks back for Halloween. They were always illegal here in the Republic.

I did secondary school in England and remember asking my classmates what they were doing for Halloween. But none of them had ever heard of it. Of course that was before those scarey movies came out.

We live in deep, dark Sussex where bonfire is a Very Serious Affair indeed.

ShutTheDoorBabe · 19/10/2023 18:13

Yes. I love watching and photographing fireworks and go to the local display every year that I'm able to to do so.

Disorganisedmess2023 · 19/10/2023 18:15

No I'm too busy peeling the dog off the ceiling because of the fireworks. 🥺

Yep, for 2 and a half months! I love it 😁

mamaduckbone · 20/10/2023 19:23

I love it! Much prefer it to Halloween. We have had fireworks at home on the odd occasion but usually go to an organised display. The dc are outgrowing it now but I would go anyway tbh.
