How much pocket money for 15 year old?

Simionfab191 · 19/10/2023 11:17

DS is 15. We're thinking £20 per week on the understanding that homework is complete, room is kept tidy and bins are put out. This is to cover food when out with friends/girlfriend, cinema trips and to allow him to save for any particular clothes or video games he wants. We'll still buy his basic items.

Does this sound reasonable?

Sounds fine to me.

Hermittrismegistus · 19/10/2023 11:30

I don't think £20 is enough. Cinema tickets here are £10, a McDonalds meal about £8.

£30 would be a more reasonable amount.

More than reasonable.
Mine don't get anything - can't afford to give them anything. They have had to go out and get jobs and earn their own money.
Has done wonders for their confidence and budgeting/valuing money.

I was discussing this with a friend yesterday, teens are so much more expensive now. I have a 17 f and 17m
The boy wants a gym membership and protein food mainly, has a girlfriend so it's trip to town and food etc regularly it's expensive VR consoles and gaming, and fashion.
The girl is into expensive skincare, makeup, driving lessons, fashion and concerts.

Both monthly bus tickets

they both have jobs whilst at colleges so they do fund themselves partly but I do feel it's extortionate nowadays.
I know they don't need any of these things however buy realistically they are there.

Mochatatts · 19/10/2023 11:41

Or they could get a job. I don't know how people afford to give a 15year old £30 a week. That's £120 a month. Sounds absolutely bonkers. Maybe that's just me though.

I think that's reasonable if within your budget.
Our 15yr old gets £10pw but we cover everything else, gym membership, games ( he only gets 2/3 a year ) and extra spends if he is going out with friends which isn't more than twice a month.

He is a good student and walks his younger sister to school in the mornings so we feel he helps out at home and appreciates what he gets which is nice.

If any of that slipped there would be a reduction in allowences.

£10 a week here for 15yo, but we pay her travel and for clothes and toiletries, so it’s just having fun and presents for friends money.

She earns about £60 a term by singing, too.

Comefromaway · 19/10/2023 11:48

Mine got around £8 per week 4 years ago. I just checked and a child in care would get £9 per week aged 15.

Hermittrismegistus · 19/10/2023 11:53

A double Big Mac meal with chips and a drink costs £5.69

A Big Mac meal alone is £6.99 where I am.

I think though that they shoudl learn that you can't always get everything you want out of your money, you might need to put some by for a few weeks before you an do everything you want. 30 seems huge

caringcarer · 19/10/2023 11:53

My 17 year old gets £15 a week. I also pay for all his clothing and shoes and trainers, but he chooses it and he has £20 a week on his college card for lunches. All of his cricket coaching, karate and Crav Maga are paid for by his PIP. If he meets friends for a day out if he's got PIP left I tell him to use that but if not I pay.

I agree, £20 is a massive amount. Cinema tickets here are £7.99 for most films but ds knew that he could not afford a cinema trip every week. Once every 4-6 weeks was reasonable. The only teens I knew that had £20-30 per week disposable income ended up spending it on vapes and worse.

There are very few jobs around that will take on 15 year olds. Most want them to be 16+

Treeinthesky · 19/10/2023 12:04

I give my 13 nearly 14 year old her child benefit

Goldmember · 19/10/2023 12:09

My 15yr old gets £30pm, it's not a lot but she manages. It only goes on junk food anyway. If she wants more for a shopping trip, I'll transfer her some from her savings.

Hermittrismegistus · 19/10/2023 12:18

where are you?

Somewhere where odeon limitless costs £17.99 as it's a Lux. Grin

I'm quite suprised people think £30 per week is a large amount, I used to get £20 per week 20 years ago when things were a lot cheaper!

BakewellGin1 · 19/10/2023 12:20

DS15 gets £20 a week transferred into his account, we also pay his football team subs and a season ticket for local team he supports (plus £10 for mini bus/drink when he goes), £10 a fortnight for barbers and £10 a week for popping to the shop with friends after school.

Beezknees · 19/10/2023 12:25

I give DS 15 £100 a month. I give monthly so he can learn to budget.

But they won't be going to the cinema every week.
