Badly burnt my tongue

Hi all,

About 3 weeks ago I was in a restaurant and burnt my tongue on the soup as I was trying to eat too fast in order to keep up with everyone else.

I thought it was just a mild burn like drinking tea too hot or something. But the burning sensation continued and my tongue was so painful I couldn't eat. I went to see the pharmacist and the said I had badly burnt the surface of the top of my tongue. It's still hurting 3 weeks later although I can see at last it is improving.

The problem now is that the underneath of my tongue is raw and swollen and really sore. I also have blisters along the sides of my tongue that keep catching on my teeth.

I've been thinking there is nothing I can do but wait for it too heal, the pharmacist also didn't think there was anything that could be done but to wait. Does anyone know of anything that can speed up the healing process? I literally am living off cereal and water as I can't eat, and am trying not to talk to anyone as it's really painful also!

You've probably tried ice-cream/lollies already. A quick Google said rinse with salt water, it aids healing but will probably sting! As if your not in enough pain already.

I’d go see a dentist but given that’s next to impossible, and it costs money, you could try GP/nurse practitioner prescriber type for something like a mild steroid mouthwash.

Definitelt avoid corsodyl and bonjela, anything with salycylic acid or chlorhexidine at this stage. A weak salty water rinse could help. Sounds hideous OP.

Have you asked pharmacist for something like difflam?

Whatnowfgs · 19/10/2023 11:49

Would definitely recommend asking pharmacist about Difflam, Corlan pellets (which are a mild steroid) or Dequadin lozenges (which say on them for sore throat but are for mouth inflammation and ulcers too.

Has the pharmacist checked if it could be oral thrush?

A burnt mouth really shouldn't take three weeks to heal. I would second seeing a dentist or GP it sounds infected.

OK thank you everyone, I have rung the GP and managed to get an appt this afternoon to see a nurse.

@swearsbymoonlight How did you get on with the nurse?

swearsbymoonlight · 20/10/2023 14:22

Thank you for asking, she didn't know what to make of it so called in a Dr. They didn't know what to do - have decided to treat it as if it's infected to see if that helps clear it up? I did have mild fever symptoms, slightly high temp etc. But I'm also peri so may not be related?

Anyway I have a weeks worth of antibiotics and taking lots of painkillers so we'll see how that goes.

You poor thing, it sounds awful. Hopefully the antibiotics will shift any infection and it will start to heal.

Silverdogblue · 20/10/2023 14:53

@swearsbymoonlight are you doing mild salty mouthwashes? Ulcers are painful partly because they get this layer of infection on top, getting ahead of that with both antibiotics and mouthwash might speed things along.

Ireallywantsomechips · 20/10/2023 15:07

Awww OP that’s awful! I recently ate a giant swizzle lolly as I remembered I loved them as a kid and essentially grazed the top of my tongue!! I won’t be doing that again 😂 it felt like a burn and it took about 3 weeks before it was normal again
