To think most people go on holidays they can’t afford?

I’m hearing more and more of folk putting hols on their credit cards as school holiday prices are crazy. It’s not something we’ve done, we usually pay monthly through a travel agent and sometimes cut back in other areas to afford it but I can’t imagine paying for something years after you’ve been on it - it would suck the joy from it for me - I think! Unless this is more normal now and anything else is the unusual way?

Paying through a travel agent in instalments is still getting into debt for a holiday though?

JohnThorntonsOverbearingMother · 18/10/2023 19:46

No, I don't think most people go on holidays they cant afford.

Torganer · 18/10/2023 19:47

I buy everything I can on my credit card. I get air miles, vouchers on some cards, and protection. I pay it off in full every month. Just bought our family flights for £4 (total) for our next holiday because I’ve used the card so much. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t if you have the means to? I’d be buying the groceries/tube/etc., anyway. Might as well get the points!

JohnThorntonsOverbearingMother · 18/10/2023 19:48

and yes, don't see much of a difference between the OP making monthly payments to a travel agent and her neighbour making monthly payments to her cc company.

Indeed! It’s probably worse as you don’t get any of the benefits you do with a credit card, and you’re still paying monthly, possibly with interest or paying upfront. At least with a credit card you pay in arrears (assuming you pay it off). Many credit cards have 0% too.

ShanghaiDiva · 18/10/2023 19:50

You know two people who have done this, so hardly lots. You pay monthly and cut back in other areas so cannot afford the holiday either.
your pathetic attempt at a smug fest has failed.

Universalsnail · 18/10/2023 19:51

We've got into smallish debt a few times to go on holiday. I don't regret it at all. Kids are out small once and we made such happy memories and saw some of the world.

HazelDean · 18/10/2023 19:51

I'm not sure most people go on holidays they can't afford but plenty do. I have family members that have huge credit card debt but still go on 2/3 holidays abroad a year....Then they complain how skint they are...

TravelInHope · 18/10/2023 19:52

How else would you pay for it? Bank transfer, debit card? Why wouldn’t you use a credit card?

Whathappensnow11 · 18/10/2023 19:52

We use a credit card for whatever we can and pay it all off at the end of the month......we do this so we can get air miles and discounts. We can afford our holidays etc but like a previous poster has said I rather pay on credit card for the extra protection. We never had any CC debt as we have always paid it off each month. With bigger things......if we can't pay it off then we don't get it.

TeenLifeMum · 18/10/2023 19:54

We pay on credit card because it gives extra cover. We pay it off the next month and never pay interest. Only ever go on holidays we have savings to cover. I don’t know anyone who goes into debt for holiday but then I’ve had people question how we afforded holidays to USA and a new kitchen. One friend openly stated “I’m guessing you got a loan for that!” Er, nope, we both work full time, earn well and saved up. Weird.

Moomoomo · 18/10/2023 19:58

Honestly I have no idea how people can afford holidays! My dh has a reasonably well paid job, I'm a carer so not very well paid but it's something coming in. No childcare costs, average morgage, no car payments, no credit cards but a proper holiday is a pipe dream. We go camping which is great but not quite the same luxury!

I tell myself people must be using cc's or payment plans to afford it to make myself feel better.

Strawberryfieldsforeverrr · 18/10/2023 20:02

We met a family on holiday last year who had paid for their holiday on the never never and said they'd spend the next year paying it back . That would be far too depressing for me, the tans gone, the memories have faded, and your still paying.
As pp I book on a CC for the protection and rewards, but pay it off immediately. I'd not enjoy a holiday I couldn't afford (although did do this when I was much younger admittedly)

Spacecowboys · 18/10/2023 20:05

I’ll assume you mean putting an expensive holiday on a credit card without paying it off in one go (when the payment is due) and then taking 12+ months to pay the debt.
I don’t think ‘most’ people do this,
Probably the minority.
I’d never go on a holiday that wasn’t paid for in advance. Mentally, I’d find it really depressing to have been on the holiday and then still be paying it off months later.

QueenBitch666 · 18/10/2023 20:05

My holidays go on my credit card for extra protection and cash back. Paid off in full every month. Never paid interest 😎

DiaNaranja · 18/10/2023 20:10

We certainly don't get in debt to pay for holidays, but aim to go abroad twice a year. We have an average household income, but prioritise holidays over general "stuff", so don't buy expensive, lavish electronics, home things, expensive cars etc, as we'd rather put the money towards experiences.

BerriesNutsConkers · 18/10/2023 20:13

If I can't afford it at the time of booking then we don't go ahead. We take holidays we have budgeted for, I wouldn't get into debt for a holiday.

CesareBorgia · 18/10/2023 20:17

Not me - if I can't pay for it outright, we don't go on holiday.

randomfemthinker · 18/10/2023 20:18

I take nice holidays but that's because it is what I make a priority over 50 other things people choose to spend their money on. I don't have any kids, pets, I haven't had my hair done for years, I say no to social events I'm not bothered about, I wear hand me down clothes from my sisters that are fine, mostly. And I keep other events like Christmas really cheap and don't the trends over "social pressure to consume". I live within my means and don't put anything on a credit card. I just simply #1 save all year and do without in other areas to afford what most sparks joy in me.

I don't think that I know anybody who does that.Confused What a daft thing to do.

I do. A couple actually. It seems weird to me, but they're both holiday obsessed and it's their thing

mugboat · 18/10/2023 20:29

we only go on holidays we can afford... and we opt for 2/3 UK-based holidays per year instead of one holiday abroad... there are 5 of us and going abroad during summer hols would be around £5k

Simonjt · 18/10/2023 20:36

We pay for ours (and virtually everything) on a credit card, we do however pay it off in full eah month.

hotpotlover · 18/10/2023 20:44

I have a friend who puts their holidays on a 0 % credit card and then pays it off over several months.

AliasGrape · 18/10/2023 20:47

We paid for our last holiday in instalments with the travel agent - was interest free. We could have paid it upfront but they offered the instalments and it seemed easier than paying from savings and then replenishing those each month so we went for it. It was pricier than our normal holidays (to be honest since having DD we usually just do uk trips or visit family abroad) but other people we were away with described it as ‘cheap and cheerful’ so I suppose it’s all relative!

In my pre-child and certainly in my single days I didn’t go into debt for holidays, but I definitely spent a really high proportion of my available income on them at the expense of what many would consider more sensible uses of money. No regrets though, holidays and travel were my priority then, and I wouldn’t swap those experiences and memories now.

Kitcaterpillar · 18/10/2023 20:48

we usually pay monthly through a travel agent

Bewildered as to how this is different from using a 0% credit card and paying it off monthly...
