I’ve been dreading watching this episode with her because she can be very sensitive. She reacted how I expected her to. She cried. So did I. Again. It’s Anya’s speech that gets me every time

Buffy was the best! This episode was so moving 😪

Soubriquet · 18/10/2023 18:45

It really is. We are doing two episodes a day. I did do it one episode buffy and one episode of angel from season 4, but she wasn’t really getting into it, so it’s back to two episodes of buffy a day.

I wonder how she’s going to manage when Buffy dies

Or oh god when Tara dies…least Buffy comes back

Series 6 and 7 might be a bit adult for a ten year old? Not pearl clutching at all, but she may find the storylines less interesting and there's a rape scene in season 6 remember.

Balloonhearts · 18/10/2023 19:29

Yeah it gets quite a bit darker quite quickly. I hate that episode though, it's the scene with Dawn at the school that gets me.

Soubriquet · 18/10/2023 19:31

We’ve seen some quite adult things together already. Obviously I’ll explain what happens when Spike does what he does, but I think she’s old enough to watch it supervised

For me, the tone of Buffy changed from this episode and never really returned. I suppose perhaps that was the point, to maybe make it feels more grown up? A bit more adult?

I found Joyce's death far more affecting than Buffy's - I think perhaps because Buffy's supernatural return was inevitable, and Joyce's was purely human.

The blurred shot of her on the sofa behind Buffy still gives me chills. The episodes that follow are also quite tough going, so be ready!

Still bloody love Buffy. But to me, the early seasons were the best 😄

OhThePain77 · 18/10/2023 19:38

I love Buffy so much! A couple of years ago I finished watching it (for the 17th time) and thought that I would never need to watch it again. Of course I've seen it at least twice since then!

That episode is so good. But it's a hard watch. I once cried within about 15 seconds of it starting. I hope your daughter is enjoying the show - I feel like that's a lovely thing to do together.

Soubriquet · 18/10/2023 19:41

It’s been nice watching it with it. I’ve been very careful not to spoil it. I’ve tried to watch a couple of other child hood favourites but so far she hasn’t taken a liking to them. Charmed and Firefly. So Buffy it is

I’m going to pearl clutch and say ten is too young for Buffy. The box set is rated 15.

I cried like a baby when I watched this last year. Fantastic episode

Figgygal · 18/10/2023 19:55

I remember losing my shit at my dad who wouldn't shut up while I was trying to watch that episode - and then I cried buckets

Barleycat · 18/10/2023 20:00

My sons and I (they are now mid/late teens) have probably watched buffy about 5 times in the last few years! My youngest especially loves it, we're on angel for the second or third time now! We saw a brilliant one man comedy show earlier in the year, the actor played spike and he acted out/narrated seven seasons in 70 mins. Can't remember his name but he was amazing, so funny. Definitely worth going to see!

It’s weird, I never cried at The Body but I cry every time I watch The Prom.

Soubriquet · 18/10/2023 20:36

Really? I would

Soubriquet · 18/10/2023 20:36

Sorry, I cry at everything really, but I didn’t at The Prom

I watched that episode when it came out, which was a year or so after my mum died. I was absolutely howling. I've watched it several times since then, and even thinking of it makes me tear up a little. It's later on when Buffy says, 'But who will look after us?' that gets me. My dad died a few years later. I'm now 59, a single parent, and I still wish someone would look after me.

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/10/2023 20:39

We're watching with DD 12. I'm conscious that we're on the Buffy/Angel spin-off now. So I'm going to swerve the shagging Riley parts and just hold off on the Spike relationship season altogether until she's older. I thought about discussing it first but the whole redemptive arc after attempted rape is a little 'Joss showing his true colours' to me.

I'm quite strict with certificates normally so I'm treading carefully.
