Hi, could anyone clever, who paid more attention than me in English lessons help with this please.
I want to send a gift to a family whose surname is Morell and have it engraved starting with the words “Christmas at the” Which of these do I end with….?

  1. Christmas at the Morells
  2. Christmas at the Morell’s
  3. Christmas at the Morells’ Ironically, the one person in real life that I know would know is a member of this family which is why I want to get it right! Thanks in advance

It's 3, Christmas at the Morells' because it's a plural possessive apostrophe.

2

BobbidyBibbidyBob · 18/10/2023 14:13

it's 3

Christmas is happening at the home of two or more Morells.

NoSquirrels · 18/10/2023 14:14

It’s a shortening of the phrase ‘Christmas at the Morrells’ house’, yes?

If I were you I’d try to avoid it by rephrasing, depending on what the gift is!

Yes, three is correct, possessive and plural

PerspiringElizabeth · 18/10/2023 14:14

3, plural possessive

You’re going to see the Morells
You had dinner with the Morells
It’s the Morells’ house
Christmas at the Morells’ (house)

No it’s more than one Morell I would have thought? So plural - Morells, possessive = Morrels’ (or Morells’s). Scrambling my brain!

FlemishHorse · 18/10/2023 14:17

“Christmas with the Morells” doesn’t need an apostrophe at all.

Yes, that's neater. Depends what the item is, I suppose.

ethelredonagoodday · 18/10/2023 14:18

3

Bramshott · 18/10/2023 14:18

I think both 1 and 3 are both correct, depending as others have said, you're implying the Morells' house, or whether it's just the Morells as a family in which case no apostrophe needed.

Ha! I edited mine because I’d typed it wrong so now your reply looks wrong (but was right at the time!) sorry!

We agree, basically. Plural possessive.

DidntHaveTheLatin · 18/10/2023 14:19

Christmas chez les Morells?!

“Christmas with the Morells” doesn’t need an apostrophe at all.

That’s what I’d do, if the item was suitable.

“Christmas with the Morells” doesn’t need an apostrophe at all.

Or, “A Morrell Family Christmas”

But 3 is correct if it must be that phrase.

CrimsonElevenDelightPetrichor · 18/10/2023 14:20

I think either:
Christmas with the Morrells (plural, not possessive)
Or
Christmas at the Morrells' House (plural possessive)
Missing out 'house' is causing some ambiguity.

Christmas chez les Morells?!

Noël chez Morell is a very pleasing rhyme. You don't need 'les' in the French.

stayathomer · 18/10/2023 14:22

Yes I think 3, initially thought 2 as I thought, but it’s eg mr morell’s house, but given there’s more than one …

Whattodowithit88 · 18/10/2023 14:22

Christmas at the Morrells. It doesn’t need an apostrophe. If their surname ended in and then you have an apostrophe at the end. So Mr and Mrs polls- Christmas at the polls’ because polls’s doesn’t make sense.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 18/10/2023 14:22

Bramshott · 18/10/2023 14:18

No, 1 is incorrect because the preposition 'at' indicates that there is a location, and because it belongs to the Morell family it needs a possessive apostrophe.

Christmas with the Morells is correct without an apostrophe.

Whattodowithit88 · 18/10/2023 14:25

Actually I think @DrMarshaFieldstone is correct.

There’s a reason they say English is the hardest language!
