Alarm for teen who has different start time every day

Hi
My 16 year old has started 6th form and the time timetable has him doing a different start time every day. I have been waking him up before I leave to drop his younger brother off at school then going into the office but sometimes this means he's getting up hours before he needs to leave and this morning I got back from dropping his brother off (Wednesday is WFH) day and he had fallen asleep again missing his first class!

I think I need to get him an alarm clock but do ones exist that you can set a different time on it every day (and not go off on the weekend)? I don't want him to start using his phone as currently he doesn't take it to bed.

I can do this with my phone but have never seen an alarm clock that does it. What if he uses his phone but puts it in airplane mode overnight?

Other ideas:

  • he sets his alarm clock at bedtime for the time he needs to wake up the following morning
  • you buy 5 cheapo alarm clocks and label/set them for the different days of the week

Fitbit? I can set the same time for every day or different alarms for different days

I have an Alexa in my bedroom (or a Google one would be fine as well). I just ask it to set an alarm for X time the next day.

I think I could probably set them all to repeat each weekday but tbh I prefer to just ask it in the evening to set one for the morning.

"Alexa, set alarm for 7:15" is all that's required.

They're usually heavily reduced on black Friday.

My alexa speaker can do this.

My lumie sunrise alarm clock allows me to set a different time for each day of the week.

YourNameGoesHere · 18/10/2023 10:33

My Alexa allows me to do this so would be a cheap solution to the problem although to be honest at 16 I would have encouraged him to find a solution to the problem, it's hardly taxing for him to Google and look for some ideas.

Could he not just get up at the same time every day and do his coursework or something?

Leftphalange100 · 18/10/2023 10:36

At 16 I'd be letting him have his phone and encouraging him to manage this himself.

GingerIsBest · 18/10/2023 10:36

Any modern device can do this - phone, Fitbit, Alexa etc. And part of growing up is learning to respond to an alarm so it's definitely something he needs to sort. If he tends to fall back asleep, get the device to set multiple alarms at five minute intervals. With different ring tones.

I'm not being difficult but why can't he just set an alarm for the right time each day? I was doing that by 12 and I really was a very indulged and protected child.

purplemunkey · 18/10/2023 10:38

At 16 can he not just use his phone? You can set different times for different days.

LadyDanburysHat · 18/10/2023 10:40

I would suggest Alexa or a smartwatch

Maybe one of those old fashioned analogue battery clocks where it is easy to just twirl a button to adjust the alarm time (my two used to have digital ones when they were too young to have phones but they were fiddly to adjust the alarm time on). You get them in Robert Dyas or similar. But I think most do use their phones by this age.

Forestdweller11 · 18/10/2023 10:45

Another one for Alexa or phone

letmesailletmesail · 18/10/2023 10:53

Can't he just check his timetable for the next day when he goes to bed and set his alarm accordingly?
