Crazy high fee for fixed brace retainers!

DD is due to have her fixed braces (NHS) removed next week. We have been quoted £600 for fixed retainers as these aren't covered by NHS!

We really can't afford this but I also know DD won't reliably wear the removable ones she will get under NHS, potentially undoing all the hard work. h

Is there anything I can do or any other options I haven't considered?

My fixed retainer was £150! That was at a private practice .

We were quoted ,£325 for 1 jaw or £600 for both!

If she won’t wear the retainers then it’s her teeth that will be squint again- why are you forking out just because she can’t be reliable?
Get the basic ones and let her step up and take some effort and show some appreciation.

Mine were £300 for top and bottom. I have a thin wire bonded to the back of my teeth.

Because some of us care enough about our children to want to protect them from consequences that may result from immaturity and affect them in the future.

Both of mine have wire fixed retainers. Was included in private price, which I felt aggrieved becarse I couldn't believe they didn't qualify for nhs. But it only covers say 6 front teeth. So you still need to wear the plastic retainer, for all the other teeth. Rise they move back, quite quickly. She needs to be informed of this and recognise she must wear plastic retainer, else they'll move.

When I had my orthodontic work done many years ago......I never knew the retainer was forever. I isednitnfir 12 months then got rid. My teeth have not gone back to where they started and I am now 30+ years post braces..... They may not be 100% in the position they were but nothing lile the over crowded mouth I started with.
Get her the removable one if you can't afford 600 pounds. It's not worth getting in debt over.

Oblomov23 · 18/10/2023 04:17

Have you asked any other private orthodontists for a quote? £600 does sound a lot!

Difficult decision to make. DD's teeth did straighten up quite quickly which, although a good thing, leaves me to suspect they would move again if she doesn't maintain aftercare.

I've just realised her appointment is actually today! Think I will have the conversation with her and see what her options are at the the ortho.

How old is she? Does she have special needs?
If she is capable of understanding the need to keep using it then just get removable
If SEN and gets DLA use that money?
