Hi I've recently had to come off the contraceptive pill I am 45 and been with dp 25 years we have 2 dcs high school age. So what do we do now in regards to contraception without having to resort to condoms? having previously had an allergic reaction to latex condoms. Could we possibly risk no contraception at my age as having googled it says the chances of conceiving natural at 45 plus is very very low? im still having regular periods. what are other MN using as contraception age 45 plus?

Dh had a vasectomy when our youngest was 5. I had an ablation done at 39. But they tried to get me to use the coil. The mini pill made me so angry all the time. It was a relief to come off it.

Certain types of contraception are free via NHS until 50, due to the risk of pregnancy. Some other forms of contraception will be offered or suggested

I would suggest speaking to your local nurse or family planning centre about your choices

If you arent overweight, don't smoke and have normal blood pressure you can use a combined contraceptive until age 50.

Other suitable contraceptives over 45 are progesterone only e.g. mini pill, depo injection, implant, coil (copper or hormonal).

Im 51 and got a new mirena coil fitted only last week. my DM suffered with horrible bleeding during the menopause so I got one fitted when I was 45.

its fabulous.

Strokethefurrywall · 17/10/2023 16:40

I'm 44 and have had the coil since 2016. First the copper and since last September the mirena which has super lose doses of hormones on my OBGYNs suggestion heading into peri-menopause.

Mine was a bit of a three fold decision: obviously don't want any additional pregnancies but I get a lot of mid cycle pressure and ovulation pain and OBGYN recommended coil to alleviate which it has done.
He also recommended mirena for peri-menopause as it would help with the hormonal fluctuations that can come.

So those were the reasons I chose mirena coil, also because the idea of going back to condoms is not something I relish the thought of!

You can get pregnant up to age 55, although the chances are obviously smaller. The combined pill can be used up to age 50 provided you have no contraindications. Progesterone-only methods can be used up to age 55, and the Mirena/Levosert IUS can be left in for up to 10 years if fitted over the age of 45.

Latex free condoms might also work for you? I would never advise natural family planning if you don’t want to get pregnant again.

I pay for Hana, just makes life so much easier

gandeysflipflop · 17/10/2023 18:25

I was going to ask if anyone has successfully used the rhythm method! I am always aware of when I'm ovulating, noticeable change in discharge plus a huge Increase in my libido. (how unfair is mother nature to us women making us most want sex at a time we can't as it will most likely result in a pregnancy!) yes I know it's designed to keep the human race going but it's just so bloody unfair!
@Catsanfan what is Hana?

Hana is a mini pill I think

LoobyDop · 17/10/2023 18:38

I’m still on the combined pill at 48, and been told there’s no reason I can’t stay on it to 50. Sadly apparently you can’t go straight from that to HRT. Why did you have to come off it?

PaperworkTrail731 · 17/10/2023 20:38

The rules were relaxed after covid for some types of contraception

Hana can be purchased from most high street pharmacys & online, no prescription required, just a few questions

HamBone · 17/10/2023 20:44

My DH had a vasectomy, but a friend swears by the Mirena coil (she’s 47, had it in for about four years). I tried the copper coil in my 30’s but it came out (twice!) so I had to give up on it.

Dr advised me there is risk of pregnancy up to five years after menopause. Coil was her suggestion

Mumof1andacat · 17/10/2023 21:14

You will still need some sort of contraceptive. A lady I worked with had a baby at 46. Was there any reason to come off the combined pill?

Sorry what? Everything I have ever read, and the advice I've had from a GP is that under age 50 you reach menopause 2 years after your last period and can stop using contraception then. Over 50 it's one year after your last period when you can stop. If you're in menopause you're not ovulating so how is there a risk of pregnancy?

Beignet · 17/10/2023 22:40

I'm now 50 and have finally just had the mirena coil fitted. I had it put in as part of HRT. I also use hormonal cream once a day too.

I wish I had it sooner as contraception, its been great.
