I've been trying to keep it off as much as possible.

Last week or so it's been on for a hour in the morning to help us ease out our warm beds but I'm trying not to push a boost button the rest of the time! Have failed a handful of times.

Usually during the day it doesn't bother me as I'm about cleaning etc but 5pm onwards its getting chilly. I went to bed at 9pm last night after my bath as it was too chilly to sit comfortably even with jumpers and socks on.

I do have a cold house, and I don't mind it sitting around 17.5/18 but it's been hitting 14 recently before the morning boost and is back to that by late afternoon.

I’ve put mine on the timer morning and evening now. It’s also been down to 14-15 degrees in a morning and it’s just too cold. Even when the heating had been on for 2 hours it wasn’t hitting the thermostat temp of 20. It’s currently saying 16.1 on the Hive which would be too cold to sit and work from home.

I think this will vary depending on where people live.

I'm in the Home Counties and had my heating on the last three mornings, for half an hour to warm the house up a bit. But haven't felt like we've needed it the rest of the day. The rest of the week it's going to be 10 degrees in the morning so probably won't need it. I'll put it back on at the weekend when it drops again.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 17/10/2023 15:00

We've put it on for an hour here and there.

Yesterday we had new fibre optic broadband being installed and for one reason or another it was very delayed. So we had the front door wide open from 5.30pm until 8pm the whole house was freezing. So the heating went on and stayed on for a few hours so we could defrost.

We don't have a thermostat so I've got no idea how cold it is in the house at the moment. Generally we put the heating on for an hour in the morning then again for an hour or 2 in the evening.

OnNaturesCourse · 17/10/2023 15:10

Actually think no termo is a good thing sometimes as I often wonder how many times I've thought "oh, is it chilly?" checked the termo and then put the heating on. Like I only put it on because of the reading or am I really cold.

Ours comes on at 21.5 during the day, as that's what DH set it to. So when the house temperature drops to about 21, Nest turns the heating on. We don't have to go and turn the heating on, or "turn it on for a couple of hours". I think Nest also notes if the outside temperature is set to drop but it's the ambient temperature in our hall that it monitors.

Overnight temp is set to 16. It's much nicer getting up in the morning when the house is warm.

I'm in Yorkshire and still got most of the windows open, it's not getting cold here yet. Hope it does though, we need some decent snow!

RedRobyn2021 · 17/10/2023 16:00

I'm in North Yorkshire and it's been really cold this past week, particularly in the mornings. On Saturday night the temperature dropped to 1 degree, I actually woke up in the night because I was cold.

Have had heating on for about 5 days in the mornings and evenings. I am a SAHM though so have had it on intermittently in the afternoons to take the cold off.

Getting our chimney swept this week so the fire will be going on which will be pleasant, have already stocked up on wood for the winter so at least it's paid for.

RedRobyn2021 · 17/10/2023 16:02

Question for everyone else though, I actually open our window's upstairs every morning because of condensation during the night and it can take 2-3 hours for that to go, I've always thought it's good to circulate the air to prevent issues with damp or mould.

Does everyone else do this?

Summonedbybees · 17/10/2023 16:05

Perhaps buy a heated throw. they provide 'fast, targeted, localised heating'. They are really cheap to run compared to heating the whole house or even the whole room.

ChienneDesFromages · 17/10/2023 16:06

We have just put ours’ on for the evening. Last night we had the wood burner on, but as the temperature is dropping, the whole house is cooling down and it was uncomfortable going upstairs to bed last night.

DH did try to switch the Aga on for the first time this year instead, and the f’ing control panel is completely dead. Cue another very expensive visit from the Aga wizard 😩

I have a hvac system so the air in my home is fresh and I don't have to open my windows and chew on the shite coming out of my neighbour's log burning stove.

cardibach · 17/10/2023 16:09

@RedRobyn2021 i don’t get condensation but I open my bedroom windows for at least part of the day all year round. I like fresh air in the bedroom and I don’t like it hot.
As for the heating, I have it thermostatically controlled and give it no further thought. It’s set fro 2 hours in the morning and the whole of the evening at 18. At that temp with an oodie and a fleece blanket I’m ok. Not being cold is a priority for me.

TheDuchessOfMN · 17/10/2023 16:19

@RedRobyn2021 I open some upstairs windows for 20 minutes or less each morning. Just slightly, not wide open. It makes the house too cold if I do it for any longer.

Nearlyspring23 · 17/10/2023 20:42

I open windows upstairs daily. It is the first house I have had to do this for. Other houses I have lived in were old and draughty. I’m currently in a newer house with good double glazing, any moisture from showers or cooking literally gets trapped inside and we get bad condensation. Thankfully the house gets lots of sun so it tends to be warm enough to open the window daily.

WastingTimeOnTheInternet · 17/10/2023 20:57

I’m really feeling the cold. I’ve been trying to just put a throw over myself downstairs, but I did cave and put the heating on for an hour yesterday evening.

OnNaturesCourse · 18/10/2023 10:03

I open the bedroom windows and close the doors in the mornings (plus the radiators in those rooms are off) I usually close then mid afternoon and open the doors so if I do put the heating on they get some heat.

I like my bedrooms aired and cool.

I do have a dehumidifier that I will sometimes run to dry laundry, or if the condensation is real bad as I hate that damp smell you can get.

I apologise for my previous comment on this thread, turns out DH and DS think it is cold and I'm just a weirdo still wearing shorts Blush

Era · 18/10/2023 15:04

I lit a fire at 8am this morning and have bend tending it all day to keep it going. Living room is nice and warm but the rest of the house is cold. It’s definitely turned autumnal
