No Christmas bonus for me

Just a rant

Been at this new company less than a year, covering someone who's off and I'm on a FTC.

Everyone is getting a Christmas bonus which I believe is 6%-7% of your annual salary. I assumed I would too as I am an employee set to be here until at least Easter next year.

I won't get it because I'm on a FTC.

I'm so upset. I was really looking forward to that, it would have helped massively.

Did you not read your contract?

LIZS · 17/10/2023 14:00

It would be discretionary at best. I doubt it would be as high at 7% anyway.

strawberrylimegin · 17/10/2023 14:01

@angsanana yes of course I did, there wasn't much in it. It was a couple of pages.

My previous job didn't have the bonus in the contract but everyone got it.

@LIZS it is this high. It's a £1b+ company.

Seems fairly common where I work any bonus has terms and conditions attached including length of time in role, any notice being worked. I assume there is a policy somewhere that spells it out.

UnexpectedCircumstances · 17/10/2023 14:02

Most places I've worked you have to be on a perm contract and have worked there 12 months before you are bonus eligible.

These are big companies with fairly genrous benefits packages, so I assumed that was standard practice.

MissyB1 · 17/10/2023 14:03

I hear you. I’m a supply staff in a private school, I don’t get any of the benefits of the permanent staff.

Having said that I used to work in the NHS and the very idea of any kind of bonus would be laughable!

Cas112 · 17/10/2023 14:03

I think its the norm. Most companies you have to be on permanent contract and to have been there 12months at the least to qualify for bonus

strawberrylimegin · 17/10/2023 14:05

It's just shit and this was just a rant.

I appreciate your replies.

I was foolish to assume.

Bonuses aren’t used to be nice. They are pay structured in a way to incentivize employees not to job switch. They also have the advantage of allowing companies to keep base salaries low so they do not overcommit on labor costs, but if that was the only concern they could pay the bonuses more frequently.

I know how you feel OP. I worked at a company for five years and their annual bonus was in the May pay. As I had left the company before the May pay day, I wasn’t entitled to the bonus despite receiving my full wage for May. It was really annoying but I got a better paying job anyway

strawberrylimegin · 17/10/2023 14:12

@Finallybreathe how frustrating for you. Hopefully I follow your path or get a permanent job here, who knows.

That's a real bum OP. Sorry that's happened, always disappointing.

Graciebobcat · 17/10/2023 14:43

It's shit not to include people on a fixed term. Understable when people haven't been there long, but you have been there nearly a year and have contributed to their success.

If you think you have done well I'd still raise it with your boss, you never know.
