The Oi Frog series, DS is 8 now & still loves them

The runaway dinner by alan ahlberg recommended on mumsnet and was a huge hit for years.

For beginning to read the usborne farmyard tales are brilliant with one large font sentence at top of page for learning to read and a longer bit at the bottom of page for adults to read.

Also both the pirates next door series and winnie the witch have chapter books for young readers so make a nice jump from the picture books.

Elephant and Piggie series and ‘Don’t let the pigeon’ series were the first books they read independently that weren’t phonics books from school. Peanut Butter and Crackers is a comic style series that they are currently enjoying independently.

Now 6, and books I read to them that they really love are chicken squad, toto the ninja cat, and Leonora Bolt series.

mine also love mythology (greek, Egyptian, etc.) and we have found some really fab books geared towards children.

Worst Witch series (for the older end)

We've started on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which DC adores. Hold off on Harry Potter - we've had nightmares after introducing it too early.
The Oliver Moon series.
Greek myths.
Usborne do lovely books which are longer stories, nicely illustrated
