A covid question about heart rate

If you've had covid did you get a fast heart rate?

My breathing is really fast and fast heart rate

No I didn’t have this. I think make a quick call to 111 to check it out with them.

TSJ19 · 17/10/2023 07:22

Hi everytime I've had covid my heart rate has gone up.

noblegiraffe · 17/10/2023 07:24

Both times I've had covid my Apple Watch has alerted me that my heart rate has been really fast even though I've been in bed doing nothing. Never had it when I've not got covid.

I did the first time I had Covid.

I wasn't even aware of it until my iWatch alerted me. My resting heart rate was at over 100 bpm.

Have you got a pulse oximeter to measure your oxygen levels?

kingkongs · 17/10/2023 07:26

Having a higher heart rate is pretty normal when your body is fighting any kind of virus/infection. My resting HR is usually low 50's and was over 70 when I was ill.

noblegiraffe · 17/10/2023 07:27

Breathing really fast isn't good though, that might need checking out.

Brocollimatilda · 17/10/2023 07:28

Yes mine did. I had a new pulse oximeter and didn’t believe the readings until they climbed back to normal slowly over a few days. When I looked back at my watch data my breathing rate & heart rate were higher over those days.

May be worth a call for advice if you don’t have an oximeter.

Sunshinemoose · 17/10/2023 07:30

This happened to me too. I ended up calling 111 who sent me to a&e to get it checked. They did an ECG and then discharged me saying that it was just my body’s response to the virus.

The racing heart died down after around 2 days but I was left with a much faster resting heart rate for a few months after!

Year13novice · 17/10/2023 07:30

Yes every time I have a cold or have had covid my RHR is higher. Sometimes it’s the first sign I’m coming down with something.

usernameA0k · 17/10/2023 07:32

Will the dr do an ecg?
I had my oxygen checked yesterday and it was ok but heart rate fast. I've just become more aware of it overnight

Should I do blood pressure check then I can tell dr what reading is

It’s a normal reaction to infection. I’ve had a cold for a couple of weeks and my resting heart rate has been sitting in the 70s rather than 40/50s. I’ve had chest infections before where I’ve had a heart rate well above 100.

Increased respirations are also fairly normal with respiratory infections. Obviously if you’re struggling to breathe or have signs of sepsis you need to get help but just breathing a bit more isn’t unexpected.

MadeOfAllWork · 17/10/2023 07:41

Not to scare you but it happened to DH and he ended up in A&E.

Like others on this thread his Apple Watch alerted him that his heart rate was unusual and he should go to the hospital. Rather than fast it was irregular. He had to have quite a lot of medical interventions and was close to dying.

Nottodaty · 17/10/2023 07:45

Flu, covid and colds has usually increased my heart rate - due to a high temperature. Both my daughters and I heart rate linked to high temp.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2023 07:45

Yes. Although I didn't realise it at the time. It went up 3 days before I felt poorly and tested positive. I just thought I was stressed.

Woahtherehoney · 17/10/2023 07:56

Yes! I had covid a couple of weeks ago and kept getting Apple Watch notifications that my heart rate was high when I was just sitting watching tv - I know those things aren’t reliable but I didn’t get them before and haven’t had one since it was just on a couple of occasions when I wasn’t well.

I was overly breathless as well but i’m asthmatic so that is common for me.

Birchvalley · 17/10/2023 08:04

I had a faster heart rate after the covid jab recently. It’s taken a couple of weeks for it to return to normal. I got checked at the gp yesterday as I’ve had other health problems this year.

fetchacloth · 17/10/2023 08:20

As other posters have said, It's normal to have a higher heart rate during an infection or virus so maybe nothing to worry about.
The last time I had covid and long covid my heart rate never really went down to what it was before having covid. That concerns me but GP not bothered about it.

emailstome · 17/10/2023 08:20

Yes I had that and I also had pulsatile tinnitus where I could hear my heart thumping in my ear when I laid down. It was very uncomfortable but the GP wasn't overly concerned and said it was my body's way of fighting an infection. It passed after a few days but the tinnitus took a few months before it properly cleared.

I think it's wise to get it checked out though.

megletthesecond · 17/10/2023 08:25

I haven't had another illness yet to be able to see what happens to my heart rate.

Tessisme · 17/10/2023 08:37

My heart rate seems to go up every time I'm ill, whether it's Covid or not. I only found this out a couple of years back when I couldn't get over a virus and went to the doctor. He commented on my fast heart rate and said it was probably because I was ill and to keep an eye on it. It stayed like that for another week or so, then went back to normal. Ever since, I have noticed it on my Fitbit when I have a bad cold or cough.
