...because I’ve Had A Fall.
not fallen down, slipped, tripped or stumbled. A Fall. (I missed a step in a shop) The assistant who came to my aid said to the other assistant “go get the the 1st aider, this lady has Had A Fall.” The capitals were audible.
I have become my Mother.
(apart from my black and blue knee, only my dignity is hurt)

Aww OP hope you are okay. X

InterFactual · 16/10/2023 21:14

I had a really nasty fall when I was pregnant and very much not old. I still recounted the story to people using the term 'a fall' rather than tripped or fell over. I don't think the term is really related age.

Focalpoint · 16/10/2023 21:16

Young person or child: fell over
Old person: Had A Fall

Yikes

DaftQuestionForToday · 16/10/2023 21:18

How old are you?

i tripped over a pot hole in a carpark. Hospital kept saying I'd 'Had A Fall' (with the audible capitals!!)

tbh I had to have major surgery & haven't been the same since, physically or mentally.

PrescriptionOnlyMedicine · 16/10/2023 21:19

I hope you’re ok, but I am crying at audible capital letters 😂

RagzRebooted · 16/10/2023 21:22

I got Shingles last week. I always think of it as an 'older person' illness, because part of my job is vaccinating people against it and we only used to do that to over 70s!
I'm not even 40. But now I feel old and almost embarrassed telling people. I'd have been happier with something young and cool, like glandular fever.

fearfuloffluff · 16/10/2023 21:31

Well the alternative to getting old is not getting old, which is marginally worse.

PeakABoocha · 16/10/2023 21:33

@RagzRebooted you really really don’t want glandular fever (and the possible ME that follows)

I had shingles aged 13, so you can feel happier that it isn’t an old persons disease!

Mum2jenny · 16/10/2023 21:38

I fell over a cundy ( raised drain for others) in a supermarket car park. I reported it to customer services and they couldn’t be nicer. I was a bit bruiser and bloodied, but ok otherwise. Just waiting to see if they actually fix the raised drains

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 16/10/2023 21:39

I'm almost 40, was in hospital recently, and was (alarmingly!) asked if I had 'Had Any Falls' recently. I chose to believe the phrasing was habit, but I'm not entirely convinced...

Mum2jenny · 16/10/2023 21:39

Please ppl who know this story, don’t let others know my identity

emmetgirl · 16/10/2023 21:40

I fell down the stairs at work a few weeks ago (I was fine -apart from my pride- I own the business and it was my own fault). Anyway, there followed a long discussion of whether I'd fallen down or had a fall.
I'm insisting on the former. I'm 57 by the way Grin

MeinKraft · 16/10/2023 21:44

I'm almost 40 and I'm finding it alarming to have very suddenly tipped into the age where people don't say 'of course you don't have arthritis you're much too young' or 'noo don't be silly it's not peri menopause at your age!' All of a sudden anything's a possibility. And the way my teeth are going I am going to need dentures before too long!

smokingcarriageonly · 16/10/2023 21:56

I went for a walk with a friend and fell over for absolutely no reason, no pothole or kerb or dizziness or whatever, I just suddenly was making horizontal contact with the road. Old person fall 👵
I had just looked over my shoulder before I fell, and when I did a bit of googling apparently this a menopause related thing (although this was a few years before my periods ended). I've been cautious ever since - there are definitely changes to how my brain deals with moving my head in one direction and my body in another - and it has made me feel old.
Otoh in my 20s I was drinking wine with friends in their flat, completely forgot there were two steps in the dark hallway and fell solidly on my arse. Young person fall 🍷 How we laughed.

Sleeplessinseattle234 · 17/10/2023 06:11

Last year I was in a cafe. Got up and put one arm in my coat and for the life of me couldn’t get my other arm in the otherside. I stopped trying as I realised I looked like my mother and grandmother trying to get their coats on. I felt so old. My husband on the other hand felt this was hilarious 😂 and now offers Everytime.

SpringIntoChaos · 17/10/2023 07:12

I haven't Had A Fall....but remember explicitly The Day I Became Old!

I'm a teacher and for YEARS the children used to routinely call me 'mummy' by accident. We'd laugh and move on.

'That Day' however, one child accidentally called me Grandma...'we' laughed (grrr!!) and moved on! I'm now 'Grandma' or 'Nanny' routinely.

Officially Old 🤣

Hope you're not too badly bruised OP 💐

CharlotteSometimes1 · 17/10/2023 07:16

Old is the goal

drinkuptheezider · 17/10/2023 07:19

Older is ( hopefully) inevitable, growing up optional) 😉

LuisVitton · 17/10/2023 07:25

Maybe asking if you have had any falls means they are wondering if you are having ministrokes, dizzyness due to something more likely to be age related,, ageing eyesight? so it is something that happens or has happened often, rather than falling over which is due to one-off tripping normally.

LuisVitton · 17/10/2023 07:29

I realised I was ageing when I had to help to pull myself up rather than using the strength in my leg muscles to push myself up. I was probably late 40s so not ancient.
It was in front of others at work when we had to plug in special equipment to a low out of the way socket. Suddenly it was hard to get myself up - leg muscles just sort of didn't work as well. Now 20 years later I regularly do 10 squats so there is some strength there

Tilllly · 17/10/2023 07:34

The key is do people laugh when you fall

Yes = young
No = old

SlightlygrumpyBettyswaitress · 17/10/2023 07:50

Has a charity mugger referred to you as "young lady?".All hope is lost there.

TheHappyCarrot · 17/10/2023 09:01

My old Dad used to say 'I didn't fall, my legs gave way'.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 21/10/2023 11:43

An update. A St Bernard bumped into my knee, it’s now really sore and a bit swollen. 😢
