Pelvic inflammatory disease - never had sex?

I’ve never had sex, never been sexually active but my GP said this afternoon he thinks I’ve got PID. I’ve got long term pelvic pain and was told I’ve got something called allodynia a few years ago, been under pain management team, been admitted a lot to hospital.

I’ve got a mirena as I don’t have periods - diagnosis of PCOS.

I had a normal CT chest/abdo/pelvis in June - not had an ultrasound in years. Had a pelvic MRI in 2016 that came back with ?endo.

GP took vaginal swabs but said as I’ve got fever, severe pain and guarding right across they’ll treat for PID. On metronidazole and codeine for a fortnight.

I always thought you had to have had an STI to get PID, so a bit unsure - I’m happy to take the meds if need be, GP wasn’t very chatty and in a bit of a rush!

Definitley not just caused by an STI

Hope you feel better soon. I believe metronidazole can be pretty tough going, do make sure you read the patient information leaflet

nhs.uk

Pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is an infection of the female reproductive system, including the womb, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

The trick with metronidazole is to take it 30 minutes after food to reduce/prevent nausea/vomiting and as another poster said to read the information leaflet. I hope you feel better soon

Get well soon! PID can come from any cause and if you have PCOS its probably a cyst that burst and got infected.

Is there any possibility you have endometriosis. I think you should seek second opinion.

I got PID from the coil so could be that? I ended up very unwell as it wasn't picked up initially. I was given antibiotics on several occasions but not strong enough to get rid of the infection so it kept coming back. I would maybe suggest that to the GP as they may not have considered it

bloodyhatemybody · 16/10/2023 21:23

Yeah GP did say it’s maybe the coil. It’s bloody sore tbh. Hopefully the meds shift it soon!

I did get told ?endo a long time ago but told there’s nothing they can do for it; same with PCOS just told there’s nothing anyone can do.

I've ended up with serious fertility problems due to the scaring so make sure they don't fob you off!

floralminimalist · 16/10/2023 22:28

Apparently it's rare not to have resulted from an STI but possible.

I had it seriously last year and ended up in hospital with tubular ovarian abscesses. I've never had an STI, but they did an MRI and found endo, so think it could have been caused by that.

Hopefully you've now got it treated, and there's not too much scaring.

warriorofhopelessness · 16/10/2023 23:24

I was told I had PID and given weeks of antibiotics. No evidence of an infection at all. Turns out I had adhesions after a simple op for an ovarian cyst. I’d be very wary of accepting a diagnosis of PID without clear evidence of an infection. I think there is a lot of lazy diagnoses in women’s health still, I’m afraid. If you have got it then you will be on the right treatment. Either way, I hope you feel better soon.

bloodyhatemybody · 17/10/2023 09:02

I do have adhesions yes, got told I’ve got adhesions on descending colon and one ovary (MRI). Also got told I had a functional ovarian cyst, but that was about ten years ago. I am sore to be honest, I thought it was mild yesterday but I am pretty achy/crampy this morning. Will persist with the antibiotics and see how I get on. I suppose it’s better to treat just in case.

Landed up in bloody A&E after fainting earlier. Hopefully get some answers. Not expecting anything though.

There is treatment for Endo, that's not true. The problem is doctors take so long to diagnose it. Laparoscopic (keyhole surgery) excision by an expert can be very effective and there is more research about medical/hormonal treatments. The mirena can help Endo too.

Sounds like you're in the right place now, hope you get the right treatment.

bloodyhatemybody · 17/10/2023 15:51

Just most likely getting sent home. Doctor pushed stomach, still extremely sore (9/10) but said nothing he can do as it’s long term. They’ve taken bloods off me just in case but said if they’re normal can just go home.

It’s a UTI, plus something pelvic. Told to start taking ibuprofen, omeprazole and amoxicillin as well as metronidazole, cocodamol and my normal daily meds. Thank God I’ve got a tablet box as I’d be so confused otherwise 😂
