hobby ideas for 17 year old -with ill health

My 17DS is currently off school long term due to post-viral fatigue and headaches. He has already missed a considerable chunk of school so will be returning to the year below (year 12 L6) in January in a phased return.

Aspart of his recovery he needs to start re-enacting with the world and I am looking for hobby suggestions to give him some ideas.

All he does at the moment is read books online (similar to fan fiction). He will be taking over the dog waking after half term as well to get him out of the house at least once a day.

Interests wise, he used to be a gamer but the headaches have stopped that, he made his own computer and keyboard (which he particularly enjoyed). He is looking to study mechanical engineering at uni but I don’t think this is a major passion, though he does love F1 and boats.

I know it is totally up to him but I thought if I could give him a few ideas (which we might not have thought about) it could possible lead somewhere. Needs to be something he can do home alone as I work full time and we live rurally so limited public transport.

I've just come across "electronics" kits - you can buy all the components to make robots and other electronic "things". There are kits for all sorts of level, from basic beginner ones (I've just bought one for myself to build) to advanced kits for experienced adults. Maybe that's something that would interest him?

Magic the Gathering cards. It can be played online. Because it's a card game it doesn't have the moving images and bright lights that might cause a headache.

Lego kits aimed at adults.

Jigsaws.
Cooking/baking. My friend’s son in a similar situation started off just making bread, and is now a great cook!
crosswords/wordsearches/suduko.
Learning a new language on Duo Lingo.

Does he like model building? Something like Warhammer or Blood Bowl etc.... could be good if he likes building the models and then painting them. He doesn't have to play the games, people pay good money to buy ready built and painted well models.

Stamp collecting. There are millions and millions of them out there, you can learn an incredible amount about geography, language and world politics from it, and you can build up themed collections on topics like football, aircraft, the Olympic Games, dinosaurs, explorers, insects, whatever takes your fancy. It is also the sort of thing you can stop and start over time. I've just re-discovered the hobby I started with my dad over 50 years ago.

Photography? Get him a second hand dslr and sign him up on Facebook with A Year With My Camera which is free and teaches all the basic skills.

He can do it at home, in the garden, on walks with the dog, with friends - the possibilities are endless snd it's a great skill to learn.

Does he have friends that can visit or suggest they go out? Fishing, walk the dog together, hobby together?

Meccano or modern equivalent
Electronics kit
Jigsaw
An adult cousin paints little toy soldiers and battle type scenes, but no idea what its called
Buy a student cook book and he cooks for you at least once a week
He could do the laundry and put it away
A book on basic, home DIY. Changing a fuse, replacing a washer etc

^^Yes this. Or a game called hearthstone (also a card based online game) neither of these gave me headaches when many other games did.
