Would you let a 4 year old sleep in a hooded onesie?

DD went to bed in her fleece hooded onesie tonight because she was cold. I've suddenly woken up thinking perhaps that's not safe... Would you let a 4 year old sleep with a hood on? There are no strings on it of course!

Yes.

Topseyt123 · 15/10/2023 03:25

Why not? Surely that's what it is for!

NervousVi · 15/10/2023 03:26

Thank you. Just doing my usual waking up in the night and panicking over something!

What's unsafe about it?

What's unsafe about it?

I suppose if the hood got caught on something (not sure what!) and strangled her? I sometimes forget that she is four and not a baby, so perhaps I don't need to be quite so anxious!

I think that's vanishingly unlikely! Hope you can sleep peacefully now.

Interesting, I'm obviously a worrier like you op as my answer would be no. My understanding is that these are generally not desiniged for sleeping and are therefore not made of firesafe fabrics. Also twisting/pulling on the hood with tossing and turning feels like it could cause issues around the neck.

Bournetilly · 15/10/2023 03:35

Sorry no I wouldn’t let her, but maybe I’m over cautious

Someoneonlyyouknow · 15/10/2023 03:58

I'd be more concerned about overheating but I think at 4 she would probably wake and unzip or remove hood?

foldingtowels · 15/10/2023 04:03

I don't let my dd who is older, sleep with a hood on. My fear is it strangles her during the night if hood gets caught

ActDottie · 15/10/2023 04:36

I’d be more worried about over heating than strangulation. But if my 4 yo insisted on wearing it I wouldn’t mind at all.

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 15/10/2023 04:36

I’ve had the exact same panic before over hoods. I think at this age it’s fine.

booksandbrooks · 15/10/2023 04:47

No, I don't let my kids sleep in their onesies at all but only because I worry they'll get too hot.

This is not a nornal way to think.

Parakeetamol · 15/10/2023 05:38

I've had this thought and cut the hood off one in a mild panic. It's probably fine though, more uncomfy if the hood isn't up and all scrunched under the neck though.

Wtfnowseptember · 15/10/2023 05:41

For me it's the overheating thing. I always take them out of them when I go to sleep.

Good to know, thanks for that.

Graciebobcat · 15/10/2023 06:24

No such thing as a firesafe fabric. Nightwear may have slightly lower flammability but it will still say things like "Keep away from fire" on it.

elizabethdraper · 15/10/2023 06:28

Mine sleep with them on all the time

As do i.

That made me smile - I think most of us have been there with small children.

I wouldn't encourage sleeping in a onesie just because they're so uncomfortable in bed - chronic wedgies every time you move 😖

Flipflopflopflip · 15/10/2023 06:54

No my DD,4, wouldn't sleep with a hood on

WaitingfortheTardis · 15/10/2023 06:58

I'm generally told I'm quite paranoid but this doesn't bother me, the hoods on onesie are usually very loose. Dd likes wearing her onesie to bed in winter here as our house is old and exposed and it can be quite chilly in the night. There's no way the hood could go over her nose and mouth and there's nothing in her bed for it to get caught on. I buy dd's ones a little larger than needed as she doesn't like anything fitted so she finds them really comfy.

NancyJoan · 15/10/2023 07:01

My DS slept in one for years. He always ended up with the covers on the floor, so his fluffy suit kept him cosy.
