Question about antidepressants

This is off the back of another vile PMS week, potentially heading into peri…

When I take stock of my life, I see no space for improvement, it’s already good.
But I FEEL numb or miserable, unreasonably so, and expect that GP may suggest antidepressants, as all lifestyle factors are in check, diet, rest, exercise etc.

For those who have been put on antidepressants, have you found that the joy of living has just returned, with everything else in place as it was? Just like that?

I would only suggest taking them if you are suffering from very poor MH eg caused by bereavement, DV etc. instead find ways to stimulate yourself. You sound more like you have ‘settled’ and are a bit bored. What would start a fire?

No. It's not fast. It takes about 6 weeks for the meds to kick in and your start feeling some improvement. But it's different from person to person. I've been on anti depressants for postnatal depression for a year and the GP wants me to stay on them for another 12mths (mine was severe). It took me about 9mths to feel like myself again. Please please take into consideration everyone is different and depression can be worse or better for different people. Please don't use my example as a "for sure", but 100% it takes a few weeks of taking the meds to START feeling an improvement.

Sending hugs and hope you will be ok xx

totally different for everyone. I have heard that they don't necessarily boost your mood per se but give you the motivation to do the things that you need to do to feel better eg exercise, see friends, get fresh air, listen to music, etc. Don't rule them out. good luck.

My feelings are numb and non existent for the every day crap.
For the serious crap AD and anti anxiety meds help me cope. I take the anti anxiety meds when shit is shitty and boom no over thinking/over reacting. I'm a lot calmer. Because I don't over think I sleep better but my ADs are sedatives so they help too.

sleep is so nice when your brain shuts up

To some extent, yes. I have an objectively good life. Strong relationship, easy child, fulfilling job. There's nothing I would change about my life really but without ADs, I pretty much can't get out of bed and can't face the day. Life isn't always amazing but it's hugely better when I'm medicated both for me and for my family.

I found my anti depressants started to work within a few days. I'd had a mental breakdown after a virus. I took them for about 5 months then came off them gradually. I wasn't myself while on them but could at least lead a normal daily life.

GPs often suggest talking therapies like CBT and even if they suggest antidepressants it's your choice if you want to take them or not.
Sounds like you might need a new challenge in your life. Could that help?
