Dehumidifier recommendations please

We live in a 3 floor mid terrace townhouse. We dry clothes on airers in the kitchen on the ground floor, but there are two bedrooms on the other side of the house, one above the other (which are above the garage) that are north facing and we are having issues with condensation/mould. The worst bedroom is on the top floor with the mould so bad we are going to have to buy new curtains as the current ones have black mould on the back (window side) of them.

I don't know if a single dehumidifier would work for the whole house - and if so which floor would it be best to go on? - or should I get 2 smaller ones and put one in the kitchen and one on the top floor?

Any recommendations/suggestions very welcome please!

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you've landed here looking for dehumidifier recommendations, we've recently updated our best dehumidifiers page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users.

Last year I bought an Ecoair DD1 Classic. I wanted it for drying washing instead of using tumble dryer or leaving it on an airer. Very happy with it - dries within a day and leaves the air feeling better. I couldn't decide which model so rang their technical department and they were very helpful to advise. I would wait until Black Friday if possible- last year they had some great reductions.

I just got a meaco one from Argos for a whopping £190. It’s incredible, I shut it in with damp clothes in a small room overnight and they’re bone dry and smell lovely by morning.

I have just bought the same one. Highly recommend!

Meaco Zambezi is what we have. It's great for drying washing and drying out houses!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 14/10/2023 22:07

We've had an ebac for 15 years, very happy with it.

MissIndecisive2023 · 14/10/2023 22:09

Meaco was one that I had been looking at. It seems that few of the models are good as there is more than one mentioned on this thread.

I would love an ebac as they seem to last forever but they are just that bit more expensive and I don't know if I can afford the extra!

We have 2 of the ProBreeze 20L/day dehumidifiers; one for the bathroom, and another to help dry our washing instead of having to drape it all over the radiators. It works well for both purposes and even has a frost protection setting.

I would probably buy two in your situation, as moving a single unit between floors might be difficult.

We have a meaco and last night I hung two enormous loads of washing last night and 24 hours later it was all dry and cost less than £1 to run.

Costco have the woods 20l on offer for £180, ends tomorrow. I can't decide if I should get it

Sounds like a good price for a 20l?

Yes a very tempting price so I'm wondering if too good to be true

MissIndecisive2023 · 14/10/2023 22:29

There is too much choice!

The meaco I have is the arete dry 12l. I’m so pleased , this time of year the washing can smell fusty. It also warms the room- in have it with washing in my little study while I work.

I have a dessicant Meaco, heats the space and keeps the house dry. I've found penetrating damp that can't be fixed until spring so it's a godsend.

And so have I for DD's flat. It's a godsend.

I have that one and it's great!

I’ve got the Meaco Arête 25l and it’s amazing - is a hepa filter as well as a dehumidifier and it makes the air inside my damp old house feel so much better and has reduced the relative humidity from around 80 to around 50 if I leave it in constant use. I do use it on the ground floor to do the whole house, though, strategically opening and closing internal doors to prioritise certain rooms. It’d certainly be overkill if what you mainly need it for is drying laundry in one room - I’d go for the smaller Meacos in that case.

MissIndecisive2023 · 15/10/2023 17:13

@BrownTableMat yea I think the 25l would be a bit much.

The kitchen where we dry the clothes doesn’t have a door so it’s just open to the rest of the house - is the at a problem?

Yes it would be because it will just continue to run to suck the humidity out of a larger space. The best place to use a dehumidifier with laundry is a small room with the door closed, then it will only draw the moisture out of the laundry and not the whole house.

iloveyoghurt · 15/10/2023 17:20

I have Eco air simple, i just bought a second one. Had the last one for 7 years but i think it doesn't suck up as much water as it was. Its great for drying washing and keeping condensation down .
