Does anyone have Starlink Internet?

Does it work well?

Does it take long to get set up or is it literally plug in and use?

Can you travel with it and use it anywhere (that it is available)?

Is it worth the money?

We ended up going with it due to our rural location. It does work well and is basically plug in and go.

We haven't taken it anywhere as we needed up having to put the dish up on a pole for the best signal, having it sitting on the ground was very hit and miss.

The indoor bit is quite big, about A4 but our internet is much better now. No fibre broadband here.

I've been on holiday somewhere where they installed it for all the cottages. It was great. Owner was happy with it he said.

We have it in our rural holiday home, which has no fibre broadband available. We’ve only had it about 3 weeks, but so far so good, excellent speed and no dropping out. Don’t know re:fitting it because our electrician did it when he did some other work, but I don’t think it was massively complicated. Haven’t travelled with it and probably won’t but it has made it completely possible for us to work from our holiday home, which is absolutely wasn't before due to carrier pigeon speed internet, so yes, for us, worth the money because we can spend more time here. One thing we did have to add was boosters to make sure the signal covered the whole of the house (the house is old with thick, solid internal walls) but it does work throughout the whole house now.

We've had it for a couple of years now and it has worked faultlessly, apart from one 10 minute drop out last year. For us it was definitely worth the money - we both work from home and DH is a developer so the faster speeds have made his up/downloads much easier. And we've got rid of BT entirely which has saved a small fortune.

We fitted it ourselves (DH is pretty handy) - it took an hour or so to fit the bracket for the dish securely to the side of the house and then feed the cabling through. Once that was done it was working within minutes. You can get someone else to fit if for you though - l notice a local tv/satelitte installation company will now install Starlink for £250.

Not starlink but we got a 4g solution for a rural property. Works well and way cheaper. Not portable though.

@UtterlyButterly2048

can you give me an idea how big the house is that you needed boosters.
I am in stonebuild old house, so 4 rooms downstairs and 3 upstairs.
is yours bigger or smaller than this?
cheers

UtterlyButterly2048 · 15/10/2023 12:42

It’s 4 bed around 2000sqf I think. But the original box thing didn’t push the signal very far out of the room it’s in (kitchen) due to the solid walls so I think you will need boosters. We got 2. 1 in the downstairs hall and one on the upstairs landing and it works everywhere now.

We have one on our rural French property. I use it at the top of the garden and it works very well, it covers our whole garden. We do have our old BT Mesh system that we brought with us though, which boosts it inside the house as the walls are 2 ft thick.

Moooooooooooooooooo · 15/10/2023 14:47

I’ve toyed with getting Starlink as our BT can be hit and miss and we’re very rural so no high speed links for us. But how can it be cheaper than BT when I’m paying £40/41 pm and Starlink is £75 for residential - or am I reading it wrong?

SirenSays · 15/10/2023 15:06

Most campervanners I know use it, I haven't heard anyone say anything bad about it.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/10/2023 15:10

Yes we have it. We live rurally with no fiber options. We struggled through with a portable Vodafone 4g router but it was very patchy on our area. No issues since we switched.

Yes its pricey, but its excellent, and no other options for us tbh. We had to get it fitted on our roof as we have young kids and it couldn't be put safely within their reach. I've also heard of cats sleeping on them as they produce heat!

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/10/2023 15:10

Although we do call it skynet in our home......

We looked at it but the mobile version is quite expensive. £85 a month plus £449 for the kit.

Ariela · 15/10/2023 16:10

We were thinking of getting Starlink, but suddenly 3or 4 of our neighbours did - and lo and behold BT is back to working normally (27 a month), we back it up with Vodafone 4g dongle which we can take out in the horsebox lorry etc when we go away (£10/month)
