If you had scaffolding going up at 8:30 on a Saturday morning, would you tell your neighbours?

I would, apologetically, beforehand. Saturday is a day a lot of people might be having a lie in, I would imagine, after a long week with lots of late nights. And I would also tell them how long the works were supposed to take.

When I lived in a semi we told our immediate neighbours when we were having work done, I think it's just common courtesy. We were on what I would consider totally neutral terms with them, as in we'd wave and say hello if we saw each other and that was it. If they were utter dickheads I mightn't have bothered.

Just because some think 8:30 isn't early or "well people with kids have been up hours already!" doesn't mean some people don't want a lie in on Saturday. It takes two seconds to pop your head over the fence or nip round and let them know.

wellandtruly · 14/10/2023 11:03

No. People frequently put scaffolding up on our street and no-one mentions it. 8:30 on a Saturday is a perfectly reasonable time.

Wiccan · 14/10/2023 11:04

Sandalholidays12 · 14/10/2023 11:01

@Wiccan you are informing not asking. There's a difference.

Oh thanks for pointing that out to me fuck me I am so dumb . 🙄

PinkyDinkyDoodle · 14/10/2023 11:06

Anything before 8, then yes. After 8? No.

Spinet · 14/10/2023 11:06

Did you know they were having work done? If you're close enough to have men outside your bedroom window they should have. If they told you that they may not have known when the scaffolders would come.

Ha street WhatsApp, bloody hell. I didn't know such things existed! Is the entire street included? This fills me with utter dread.

Most people are in it. It actually works amazingly well, no-one posts anything other than street related business and it's an excellent way to locate your missing post/parcels, borrow things from neighbours, donate things you don't want anymore and tell everyone about building works etc without ever having to actually speak to anyone.

Why on earth? It’s perfectly usual, and quite useful for things like lost pets, gluts of fruit, water or power cuts, traffic issues. People occasionally offer free tickets to local events they can’t use at the last minute. It’s not a multiple posts a day thing. He last post on our was a week ago, warning that someone’s visitor, parked on the street, had left their car lights on.

Obviously, joining is voluntary.

Fahbeep · 14/10/2023 11:08

Probably not. It's a slippery slope to asking permission and someone asserting a non-existent right of veto. Grinbeg for forgiveness rather than ask permission.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 14/10/2023 11:10

Wondering if this was our street this morning, but ours was 7.45 am that they turned up and started clattering around.

I had informed the neighbours that the scaffolding was going up at 10am on Monday as that’s when I was expecting it.

ColleenDonaghy · 14/10/2023 11:11

Bit of a drip feed that they're outside your window OP.

wedonttalkaboutyouno · 14/10/2023 11:13

No, because our neighbours would just moan and moan in the lead up to it. If we don’t give them advance notice, they don’t say anything. It could happen at midday, and they would still moan if we told them in advance.

Tara336 · 14/10/2023 11:20

Our old neighbour had scaffolding put up in our bloody garden and they never informed us, we found out when we came home to find it, apparently we were very unreasonable to be annoyed and they wrote us a letter on A4 paper telling how upset they were with us. I went round and told them I didn't care get it out of my garden. After that episode no I wouldn't inform them if I was doing anything to the house that might affect them.

DragonFly98 · 14/10/2023 11:27

Anything before 10am is early on a weekend , we bought our neighbours beer and wine.

AFieldGuideToTrees · 14/10/2023 11:30

Yes, I'd let my nice neighbour know, although we'll have long discussed it anyway!

The neighbour who regularly does loud work at all hours, no, and I'd encourage the scaffolders to come an hour early! 😆

MolkosTeenageAngst · 14/10/2023 11:31

What difference would it have made if they’d told you in advance? The noise disruption would have been just the same, in fact it probably would have been worse because you’d have been anticipating being woken.

Janieforever · 14/10/2023 11:34

It probably wouldn’t occur to me for an 8.30 start.

dont you close your curtains or blinds? Surely you must have heard them before you opened them, so not sure on that point, and if the road is blocked then I’m sure its either temporary or they will move if you need to.

VisaWoes · 14/10/2023 11:37

I doubt your neighbours knew. Scaffolding companies don’t seem to give any notice and often turn up days before you expect them, I assume it’s easier to put it up early at the next job rather than storing it 🤷‍♀️

Maddy70 · 14/10/2023 11:37

Yes I definitely would. Its common courtesy

In my area it's a Facebook page, WhatsApp seems a bit more of a demand, probably just me as I don't enjoy the idea of one person maybe not being part of it and then it all feels a bit intense. However I don't like WhatsApp because it publicly displays when each reader has seen a post, creating an expectation to comment or reply. Great if it works for everyone in your street though!

Doingmybest12 · 14/10/2023 11:40

I couldn't get het up about this. I might think, ' that's a bit loud ' but then I'd think about my day. Live and let live.

Itcanhappeninanysituation · 14/10/2023 11:41

We've never been informed by the scaffolding company when our own scaffolding is going up. Our experience is they arrive and it goes when they are ready.

Also, believe as scaffolding is supporting a structure it go up anytime and anyday. Due to safety reasons.

adriftabroad · 14/10/2023 11:55

Yes. I would.

8.30 on a Saturday has variously been early for me and late, at different stages and for different ages. Pretty much always annoying before 10 am either way. Especially when you are talking about a family with different needs depending on individuals in that family.

"8.30 on a Saturday is not early" is a ridiclously subjective thing to say.

Desecratedcoconut · 14/10/2023 11:57

I wouldn't expect it of my own neighbours. I'd tell my own in passing conversation but I don't think I'd make a song and dance about it. It's 8:30, not 5am.

NeedWineNow · 14/10/2023 12:01

Yes I would, whatever day/time it was going up. We have always told our neighbours if we're having works done so that they are aware. It's good manners to do so

megletthesecond · 14/10/2023 12:15

My neighbour had scaffolding put up the other Sunday morning. Bit noisy but moaning about it wouldn't have helped.
