Turning house down due to garden?

linkinhark · 13/10/2023 21:27

I've recently been offered a house through a housing association after waiting years.
The only issue is the back garden has a really low fence.
Im unsure if I'm able to put a bigger fence in
I really don't want to turn the house down but do want more privacy
Anyone have any ideas what I can do to give myself privacy ?
I did see bamboo screening?
Does anyone know how this works ?

You can't seriously be considering turning down a house because you don't like the fence!! That's just ridiculous.

Take the house, worry about the garden later or goodness knows what you might be offered next time

I have found these
Stupid question but do these just go into the ground ?

No you normally attach Hazel hurdles to posts. Like these. Easy enough hammer into the ground and then attach the hurdles with cable ties or thick string. Like this Primrose is usually the cheapest for Hazel hurdles and their delivery costs are good.

If you install hurdles, you’ll just need to mow the lawn and add some flowers in pots and the garden will look so much better.

You can get rolls of bamboo or willow screening and attach it to the existing fence with strong wire. We did this and it works fine. It doesn’t last forever but it isn’t too expensive to replace.

Don't turn it down. I thought your title meant you were turning it down because it didn't have a garden at all and I think lots of people would say yanbu for that. But this is a perfect garden lots of people would wish to have. I think you'd be crazy to say no

linkinhark · 13/10/2023 22:00

Yeah I'm deffo taking it
Just gonna wait till spring and sort it out
My partner should be able to sort it out

Sorry OP you sound rather ungrateful. You've waited years for a house and you think the garden is a problem!

This! Just accept the house. There’s loads that can be done with regards to the fence.

"I just for a second thought about it" and decided to post on Mumsnet about it? Is that how your life goes?

linkinhark · 13/10/2023 22:04

I've never had a garden as a adult or child so didn't even realise there was lots of things you could do
I have 2 dogs so wanted a safe garden that they couldn't jump over /get out if they were in the garden
Now I know there's loads of options I'm okay
I think I was looking for a reason because I'm a bit nervous about moving
I'm just being silly

And if you aren't allowed to increase the fence height, plant some bamboo in pots, it'll grow huge quickly and provide a good screen.

Make sure you put the bamboo in pots though, it's a thug and will take over your whole garden if you plant it directly into the soil!

Yes, and you have to stand the pots on a solid surface like a paving slab, otherwise the roots just go straight through the bottom of the pot into the soil and spread that way.

You’ll make it lovely OP don’t worry… enjoy your new home!
