How do I get my records

I'm in my mid 40s . Will I be able to get my medical records right from around 4 years old to present? Or would my childhood ones be gone?

All your medical records? Gp and hospital?
Have you stayed with same doc?

Britneyfan · 13/10/2023 16:10

If you were born in the U.K. your current GP will generally have them all, and you can request them (you may need to pay for printing costs) though the older stuff will likely be paper based still. And records back then were not anywhere near as detailed and well kept as they are now.

Britneyfan · 13/10/2023 16:10

Why do you want them? There may be an easier solution than just requesting all of your records.

I want to know why I went to a school with special needs. I went fro around the age if 8 -16 but I don't actually know why .

Would the school still hold historic records at all? A long shot perhaps?

I doubt it very much . That's such a long time ago .

I'm in my 50s and when we moved to France 2 years ago we both got a full print out of our records and it included info on my childhood medical issues. So yes, it is likely that you can get this from them.

scottishmk · 13/10/2023 16:26

Get the NHS app, i was born in midlands in 1980s and surprised to see all records on there

LIZS · 13/10/2023 16:26

Childhood records are destroyed at age 25. You can make a dsar request from the trust of the hospital/clinic you attended but be prepared for nothing to be available.

Cannas · 13/10/2023 16:33

A lot is on the NHS app. My adult DC were amused to see everything from birth on there.

I think I tried that it's asked me for ID I don't have a driver licence or passport.

So I may never know why I want to a school for people with special needs. And tyete will be a massive chunk missing of my live that I have no understanding of

Dd's didn't even get transferred from a university GP to home GP when she came back, so they were completely unaware of quite an important diagnosis.

Definitely this, my records on the app go back to the 70s, I was a clumsy bugger, forever breaking bones.

Dowhadiddydiddydum · 13/10/2023 16:44

You can request them from your GP probably best to specify what you want (eg between which dates) otherwise you might have too much to work with or they will take forever

LIZS · 13/10/2023 16:46

@Dsautism possibly not. You can but make the requests of anyone who treated you at the time and your former school. Did your issues or diagnosis not require support into adulthood?

I know absolutely (nothing ) my mum told me I was going to a special school . A bus would pick me up. I said ok and like a divv I never ever questioned it.

It may not be in your records, in the 80s parents could choose if they wanted autism diagnosis in the records or left off, my friend went to a special school but has no record if autism as her mom asked the doc not to record it, so is now trying to get a diagnosis but is struggling due to the backlog of getting diagnosed.

Dsautism · 13/10/2023 17:06

So I looked on the NHS because I don't have photo ID it said I can contact the surgery. Ask gp to register me for on line service.

Tell them I will Need linkage key or passports. Ods, cod. Account ID

So I just rang them. They said I need to fill in a form . And bring photo ID. I said I don't have photo ID. She said thats what you need . I told her what it says on the app if I don't have photo ID. She then said so you have no photo ID , nothing at all. I said no, she said i will have to fill in a form and see what they say. I think I'm going to have problems.

Have I missed something? Why can you not just get photo ID?

SunflowersAndSmellyTrainers · 13/10/2023 17:15

@Dsautism - nothing to stop you applying for a provisional driving licence to use as ID. Costs around £34 from memory.

LIZS · 13/10/2023 17:16

No bus pass or voter id?
