Induction hob protector mats

Please help me - I’m driving myself mad on Amazon!

I’m getting a new induction hob and have read about protector mats to place between pans and the hob to prevent scratching. I think I’d like the individual pan mats rather than one that covers the entire hob, but I’m getting bamboozled by all the different choices on Amazon. The reviews should help but tbh they are adding to my confusion.

has anyone used any they could recommend? Are there any pitfalls I should be aware of? Most say they shouldn’t be used above 450F - I have NO idea how hot an induction gets, is this going to be an issue? Any recommendations apart from Amazon?

all advice gratefully received!

I have an induction hob and I’ve never heard of protector mats. Sounds like a faff.

I use a few different kinds of pans and none of them have ever scratched my hob.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 13/10/2023 14:47

Sounds like an unnecessary expense to me. My induction hob is not scratched either!

ComtesseDeSpair · 13/10/2023 15:06

Agree, I’ve had several induction hobs and they’ve never scratched. I’d assume the mats are because some people use their induction hob as additional counter space? (The first one I had, in a very small kitchen, was recommended to me by the kitchen planner for that purpose.)

I have never used them and have no scratches. I occasionally put a tea towel down between job and saucepan if something is likely to boil over before I notice.

Caspianberg · 13/10/2023 15:29

Why would you do this? The idea is the pans touch the induction magnets.

we cook several times a day, no scratches. I think you would drive yourself crazy making sure you added them every time

Pollymollydolly · 13/10/2023 17:21

Thanks all. That’s interesting - I’ve read that the hob, being glass, can get scratched fairly easily.

the hob won’t be used as an extra work surface, we have plenty of work surfaces. However my family are not careful and I will be very annoyed if my lovely new cooker gets scratched! Interesting that you can use a tea towel under the pots.

I think I’ll buy a couple of the higher rated ones and see how they are. They aren’t overly expensive (especially compared to the shiny new cooker) and I’m not worried about people remembering to use them - I have the fear of God put in them, I’d say they’ll be almost afraid to stand too close to it😂

We also use ours as extra surface a lot and no scratches either. We also have one in holiday let where people are notoriously heavy handed, it’s been in around 4 years and is fine.

DH and I are both really careless, have had our induction hob for 18 months and it hasn't got a scratch on it.

JustAMinutePleass · 13/10/2023 17:28

Induction pans are smooth on the bottom and flat-bottomed too. So provided you get the best you can afford and lift them off / on the hob (instead of sliding them) they’ll be fine. Also - some high end hobs / pan combos like Novy / Le Crueset will melt induction mats as they are so efficient the pans get hot. If that happens you’ll end up having to replace the hob and the pan.

ValBiro · 13/10/2023 17:35

Adding to the resounding chorus that you really don't need to do this OP... It would be really hard to scratch induction glass without using something quite abrasive like sandpaper!

andtheworldrollson · 13/10/2023 17:38

Even I have failed to scratch out induction hob

wellthatwentwelldinnit · 13/10/2023 17:38

I have one, picked it up brand new from a charity shop. It works fine but you do have to clean under it regularly. You don't realise how dirty the job is getting underneath. 🤢

I too was worried about scratches but haven't even had a problem before or after.

DigbyTheDigger · 13/10/2023 17:40

DP does that cheffy thing of yanking pans backwards and forwards, does that scratch induction hobs?
I’d be the same as you, OP, I’m planning a new kitchen and am thinking the hob should be for display purposes only. Grin

Timeforabiscuit · 13/10/2023 17:41

Two teens and a clumsy husband, no scratches after 6 months still looks like new.

JustAnotherCheeseburger · 13/10/2023 18:59

We've got one scratch on ours and I actually think it was done when it was installed. We've had it 4+ years and there's no further scratches on it and we use it every day (family of 4).

What I love about it the most, is that there isn't anything on it and you can just quickly wipe it with a cloth. Honestly the protection mats would just get in the way. I agree with a handy tea towel for when stuff bubbles over.

Pollymollydolly · 13/10/2023 23:36

Thanks everyone, looks like I don’t need to bother with the protectors.

@DigbyTheDigger I’ve managed for the last week without a hob so maybe I can keep the new one as decorative only😂

My last three hobs have been induction and never heard of these protector thingys. You really don’t need them. They don’t scratch at all.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2023 00:06

I've never heard of hob protectors either.
I occasionally put a tea towel down between job and saucepan if something is likely to boil over before I notice.

Otoh, I'd never heard of doing that but it's genius - so annoying when something boils over, water gets on the controls area and the darned thing errors or turns off.

RemiMartin · 26/02/2024 18:51

Personally having just purchased my first induction hob at just shy of £1000, I'm not taking any chances and will be purchasing a protector asap!
It only takes a second for someone to drop something heavy on it and that's it, but I guess everyone on here has been lucky so far....me.....not so much, luck doesn't come my way !
