Busy social media feeds are very quiet given the recent events

I have absolutely nothing of value to add to the actual conversation and the whole thing is just so heartbreaking on both sides.

That being said I’ve noticed the absolute lack of anything on my media feeds from direct friends. I’m not advocating anyone to need to have a stance on the current events but quite a lot of them are very passionate about posting on current events, racism, equality and have zero reservations about offending anyone in stating their views. The silence however on anything has been absolutely deafening.

You are saying that people should have a stance though. You're demonstrating that "but" means "forget everything I just said." It's not helpful to go looking for reasons to create drama.

The people you know will have things to say about equality and racism, etc, from their own observations and lives. The Israel–Palestine situation is very different.

Most people here have no connection to it and if they do, they will have learned to keep quiet if they have strong views. It's a notoriously complicated situation and everyone knows (1) how insanely unreasonable extremists can get about it and (2) how little the average Brit understands about it.

Your friends are teaching you a valuable lesson. We don't always need to open our mouths.

People probably don't want to get embarrassed posting the wrong thing.

Look at Justin Bieber and Jamie Lee Curtis just reposting what they were sent then being told they are using the wrong image.

I think they are wise. This is not a simply issue and there is no easy solution. Not a good fit with social media.

Bemyclementine · 13/10/2023 07:25

I really don't understand it, I know very little about the whole situation, historical and current, and therefore would never comment. I'd only ever "take a stance" about something that I was very confident in my views on.

Pigeotto · 13/10/2023 07:42

Yes I’m really hoping that this is the case. I’m hoping they maybe have realised that you don’t need to have an opinion on everything in the world and some things are just so heavy and deep rooted. I didn’t mean to sound as if people should have an opinion at all just the vast majority of the people I follow that are always so vocal on seemingly everything. It’s just a very different experience of a current event

Maybe they're respecting the Israeli and Palestinians who have asked people to stop posting about issues they don't understand.
A post on social media isn't activism. It isn't campaigning. It's performative showboating.
And even a cursory glance at threads on here shows there are lots of people who don't understand the situation and who are spouting offensive racism/hate speech against Palestinians, Israelis and Jewish people.
