That's all the detail I have? No idea what the project is. What would you send? I've got quite a lot of crafty odds and ends I can send in or do you think they just want old bean cans and bottle tops?

I'd send the bottle tops etc. Send stuff they don't mind sharing with the whole class. It's amazing how protective kids can get about a fabric off cut from their home, especially if it's one of the nicer bits sent in!

noblegiraffe · 12/10/2023 23:52

Cereal packets, plastic milk bottles, stuff that can be made into robots etc.

I wouldn't send in cans tbh, sharp edges.

I’d send some empty cereal boxes, bits of coloured string or ribbon, egg carton, shiny paper or foil, that kind of thing.

Saz12 · 12/10/2023 23:53

Id guess stuff like empty cereal boxes, craft items you already have but genuinely will never use, etc. Like an upcycle /recycle project: no sharp edges etc but appealing / interesting things would be good.

StarlightLime · 12/10/2023 23:53

Send in your recycling bag 😁

Merrilymerrilymerrily · 12/10/2023 23:54

Loo roll inners, small boxes, clean plastic tubs, string, plastic bottle tops, bits of ribbon - that’s what mine use anyway!

I doubt it's for a specific project, probably just to allow them to build up a stock of craft bits for when they're needed.

evtheria · 12/10/2023 23:57

Sturdy card boxes, yoghurt pots, those plastic 'eggtrays' that boxed chocolates nestle in, ribbon scraps, popsicle sticks, paper plates (usually have a few random themed ones in cupboard), the tubes from kitchen foil/baking paper

Ah I don't think my son even knows half the stuff I'm sending in exists. It's just rolls of washi tape that won't be used, half used balls of wool, that sort of thing! Proper junk although they do come in handy when school wants us to create a book character out of eggs for world book day etc

It'll all come back home anyway, except this time you're supposed to act pleased to see it.

Ah yes I have all that stuff lurking around. School is going to regret this request because my cupboards are going to get a clear out!

evtheria · 13/10/2023 00:05

Don't get too excited.
I thought "brilliant, I can have the scrap cupboard back!". My child brought home a 'junk model' he had made nearly every schoolday for the next couple of weeks. Couldn't be thrown away, nooo... they had to sit (you guessed it!) in the old scrap cupboard.

In the end I filled a large cardboard box with smaller cardboard boxes, lolly sticks, a half used ball of wool, a random bit of bubble wrap, a bag of wallpaper scraps, a roll of washi tape and some coat hangers. Oh and a random box of pencils I found in the boot of my car. She was probably only looking for empty milk bottles 🤣

Plastic bottle tops are great for wheels for vehicles. Be prepared for what they bring home though. In reception, my DS brought home a 24 egg tray with each section filled with loose sequins… that he promptly dropped on the floor of the car 😭. No idea what it was meant to be either.

Casperroonie · 14/10/2023 22:15

No cans!!!! They havecsharp edges and cut children.
Egg boxes, bottles, all sorts of boxes like cereal etc.

Azurebird · 15/10/2023 05:20

Pringle tubes used to be the most converted of all craft items when mine were in infants.

I also would dismantle their "models" very carefully, put the bits back in the craft bag, and return them to school, for another round of modelling ..... extra green points

VashtaNerada · 15/10/2023 06:08

As a teacher please make sure it’s all clean! Nothing more disgusting than milk cartons with a bit of sour milk left in the bottom…
Cereal boxes and plastic bottle tops are always popular, but yes washi tape and wool would also be hugely useful!

This, and you’re never allowed to throw it away. “Mummy I maaade that!”
or worse “but I made it for yooouuu, don’t you like it?”

saffy2 · 15/10/2023 07:31

I’d send stuff from my recycling bin

Yep. Sent in most of our recycling, pleased as our wheelie bin was full. DD came home with an empty milk bottle with a piece of string sellotaped on the front: “it’s my dog”. It has to live on our sofa. until I bin it and blame Burglar Bill.

RecklessBlackberries · 15/10/2023 09:24

It's the contents of your plastic and paper recycling bin plus any scraps from your kids arts and craft materials, essentially.
