Ds anxious as school.

Ds is 8 . He's now in year 4. He has an ehcp so gets extra help . He's been quite unsettled and not happy since starting his helper is also the TA. So shes got to help other children as well . Ds said he does not get much help . He does not like his helper much . And he's scared of the teacher because he shouts and puts preasure 0n him about his work. He's been crying in class but hides his face so no one knows .

His helper spoke to me briefly today she acknowledged that he can't keep information in well. Such as as words like this, that ,them. She said he will say them and 2 weeks later he's forgot them. It's not 2 weeks at all. If he was asked an hour later he would not know them.

In year 3 he was very happy . His helper sat with him alot . And was very gentle with him. His voice is very gentle almost bordering on a wisper he was never upset at all.

Ds gets quite anxious and upset over things that most people don't give a second thought. But he also won't tell anyone how he feels. There was a general letter given out last week about children's mental health everyone got it. But ds was scared to give it to me and got upset.

Also when his EHCP was updated last week he got quite upset. The meeting was without him. Apart from 2 mins when he just got asked what do you think might help you. He was upset for a good couple of hours after.

I don't (think) the teacher is shouting at him. I think maybe ds is sensitive. It could be that his voice projects more or that he does not speak as softy as his old helper. He also gets over whelmed quickly.

I'm not sure if I should give it a bit longer for him to settle. Or if I should contact senco. I also want to be a little careful not to over protect him.

He’s getting older and they will start to get treated as such. It’s less than 3 years to high school now, so I’d have a word and see how they can help him.

Hes younger than his actual years though. Although I do get whay you mean . This was why I was wondering if I should leave it a bit longer .

We did do an update on his ehcp a short while ago. But maybe o need tk talk to senco more about his emotional side of things

Ideally you should have mentioned his struggles during the annual review so the ehcp could be adapted if needed. But yes have a word with school

What does his ehcp actually say about the support he should be getting?

Has he been assessed for dyslexia. Its very common for children with dyslexia to forget words immediately afterwords and totally not their fault as they struggle to retain stuff in their short term memory. It's also very common for them to be anxious as they know this is a difficult environment for them and they know something is wrong. I would be very concerned if anyone was cross or annoyed with him as how will that help. Why was he given a classroom aid? What is his diagnosis?

He has autism and they just said learning difficulties. He's not had assments for dyslexia. He's currently working at year 1 level. He's got ehcp due to his autism and because of the difficulties he has academically.

I don't know if they are annoyed or cross. Ds gets very upset and emotional because he's taken things the wrong way or not understood. But I'm not there so can't be 100%

Check what his EHCP says about his 'helper.' If he's meant to have 1:1 support for X amount of hours then the school will be receiving money to pay someone to work in that role. Ie this should not be the class TA. If his class does not have a TA then the teacher may well be using your son's support worker as the general TA but it's not your child's fault the school can't fund a TA and his money should not be used for this.

I'm going to try and find it now. In year 3 it was the TA bit he was with ds alot and used to sit next to him at his table. But also was a TA within the class... now he's in year 4 it's a different TA but I don't think she gives him as much help as his old helper/TA did. Ds just keeps saying she's a very busy lady .

I can't get into my egress emails 😫 I did find one that said DS is a band 4 on his ehcp and they get I think it said 12k funding for him

The funding is irrelevant to a point. For a child to be guaranteed 1-1 in school it needs to be explicitly written in the ehcp section f

Nothing in there would suggest any level
of 1-1 guaranteed from what I can see.

for comparison my son has full time 1-1 and his wording is “25 hours 1-1 a week in lessons with a high level of support during break times”

unless things are explicit sadly there is always going to be grey areas.

Thank you for looking . I was not sure if he had an official 121. As I don't fully understand the report .

I'm glad your son is getting the support he needs .

Hopefully my ds will settle could be going from year 3 to 4.
