No cause of death

My dear Mum died suddenly at the age of 82. The post mortem did not find a cause. Further tests could not find a cause. An inquest is to be held. I'm broken. I may never find out why she died.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s very difficult when you can’t get answers as to why you have lost a loved one, especially when it was such a shock.

I hope that you have support around you? Keep talking to people.

EmptyVesselStar · 12/10/2023 15:38

She was getting forgetful and spoke very little. I thought she might be getting dementia. But wouldn't this show up on a post mortem?

I’m afraid I’m not qualified to give a definite answer, but I would think unlikely. We’ve had a similar case in our extended family recently and it’s very hard to accept and adds to the grief.

Could you speak to her GP or your GP. Just someone qualified to go over it with. It might provide some peace.

So sorry, any unexpected or unexplained death has a PM there are 101 reasons. As long as they can’t find anything suspicious just accept she didn’t suffer.

When does "old age" become a cause of death these days? I remember my 80 year old great-grandmother having that as her cause of death in the 80s (IDK how it was properly recorded, I think "natural causes", but it was fairly well understood back then that at some point the elderly stop living).

I'm sorry for your loss but TBH I wouldn't have even expected a big investigation or cause of death for someone over 80.

Very sorry for your loss 💐xxx

I am so sorry for your loss. Those that be, are worried and having ruled out the usual reasons want a cause of death established for obvious reasons which is why it has been referred to the coroner's court.

Roselilly36 · 12/10/2023 16:40

So sorry OP. Natural to want a reason, quite often frailty of old age is what is recorded. Sorry you have lost your mum, try not to focus on the reason too much, as it doesn’t change the outcome. Grief is a really hard journey, been through it many times, it takes time, and often it strikes you when you least expect it. Flowers

Notimeforaname · 12/10/2023 16:44

If they cant find a cause and she was in her 80s it's safe to say it was more than likely old age/natural causes.
I am sorry for your loss op.💐

SleepingisanArt · 12/10/2023 16:51

You'd need a brain scan when alive to spot dementia and they don't routinely scan the dead (it's very expensive!) Dementia won't be a cause of death and if they don't 'find' a cause it will probably be attributed to old age / natural causes. There would only have been a post mortem if your Mum hadn't seen her GP in the 2 weeks (might be a month, not sure) leading up to her death.

Sorry for your loss, don't dwell on the 'reason' just celebrate the life she had and look after yourself.

So sorry for your loss op. My dear friend and next door neighbour died in her sleep. She was only 72, and they never found a cause. She had to have a PM and a Coroners report. I think it may be more common than we think. We are so used to medical intervention, that it comes as a shock that you can just pass away suddenly.

Not necessarily there are many different forms,of dementia
And she might have been in the early stages .
