Do many people still wipe down their shopping pandemic-style

Friend said she still does this. I was surprised. She wipes down every item in her supermarket shop when she gets home.

Do many people still do this? I never did it but I appreciate at the start of the pandemic, if people were in vulnerable groups, it was quite widespread to do so. Now though?

NO!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 12/10/2023 09:32

Wow, people are still doing this? I thought it was a bit OTT even at the height of the pandemic but I'm too lazy to be arsed to do stuff like that!

I guess some people just got into the habit of doing it and never stopped?

PinkRoses1245 · 12/10/2023 09:33

never did it anyway! It's basic science, Covid is transmitted through air and contact, not shopping. If you don't want Covid, don't go shopping in the first place.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 12/10/2023 09:33

No 😂 I don't think 'wiping down' is going to do much unless I guess she's antibacing everything?! It sounds a bit like washing chicken - just smearing germs around!

CesareBorgia · 12/10/2023 09:33

I didn't do this even at the height of the pandemic.

CloudPop · 12/10/2023 09:33

I never did it, dear me people are still so anxious

Nolongera · 12/10/2023 09:35

No sane people.

givemeasunnyday · 12/10/2023 09:35

NO, and I didn't do it during the pandemic either - and I haven't had covid.

Anyonebut · 12/10/2023 09:35

Is your friend a germ/phone? If not, it’s very, very bizarre.

TeenDivided · 12/10/2023 09:36

My parents (90s) did this for ages, but even they have stopped.

PantsToItAll · 12/10/2023 09:37

I did during the first lockdown. I decanted things like fruit and washed right away then wiped down milk bottles, etc etc. It took blinking ages but I was scared back then. I’d remove my shoes at front door (normal in our house) and then dettol spray the soles after going outside. Lots of actions that looking back were OTT.

By the second lockdown I did the main items like milk etc but didn’t do as much. I don’t bother now and haven’t for a good while. I feel sorry for your friend of their anxiety is that high they are still doing this.

Bumply · 12/10/2023 09:37

I tried it once in the first grip of lockdown

Never again

vapesareforsnakes · 12/10/2023 09:38

Redic!

Yerroblemom1923 · 12/10/2023 09:38

No, I didn't bother back then either. Bonkers behaviour.

octodrive · 12/10/2023 09:38

vapesareforsnakes · 12/10/2023 09:38

Redic!

What does that mean?

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/10/2023 09:39

Even at the height of the pandemic, when I believed there might be a genuine risk of transmission from surfaces, I still just could not be arsed to wipe down the shopping.

Stroopwaffels · 12/10/2023 09:39

No! Never ever did this, not even in March 2020. Plainly bonkers. If they are using single use wipes for all this "decontamination" I judge enormously.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 12/10/2023 09:40

octodrive · 12/10/2023 09:38

What does that mean?

If you say it out loud, it sounds like it's short for "ridiculous"?

CwmYoy · 12/10/2023 09:41

Some items we've always wiped. But because of rat piss rather than Covid.

Smartiepants79 · 12/10/2023 09:42

Nope, it was pointless back then and it’s even more pointless now.
Still continue to be shocked at the impact lockdown and fear-mongering had on apparently sensible and intelligent people.

StillWantingADog · 12/10/2023 09:42

I never did. But I think the pandemic has made me a bit more of a germ-phobe (and crowd-phobe) generally. I think it's screwed us all in different ways. Some tragic, obviously.

cherryassam · 12/10/2023 09:43

I don’t but I would if I was going to let my contamination based OCD run wild. Might that be what’s going on?

The part of my brain with the OCD and anxiety thinks how marvellous to feel like I’ve cleaned everything and then I don’t have to worry about anything being on the food.

But the rational part of my brain knows that it wouldn’t actually make me feel any better and would just be fuelling the fire of my OCD / anxiety. Weirdly I have to work quite hard to resist the temptation.

x2boys · 12/10/2023 09:43

Never did
But why do, you care what your friend does?

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/10/2023 09:43

looks at the calendar to see what year it is.

No, did it once back in the days.

Stroopwaffels · 12/10/2023 09:44

Never did

Maybe because she's worried/cncerned about her friend's mental health state? I would be concerned about how a friend was coping if I heard they were doing this.
