Vaping amongst children

The government needs to come down hard on vaping. 1 in 10 11-15 year olds are vaping! That’s a ridiculous number. This young girl has been left with permanent lung damage. Shops that sell them need monitoring and the age limit needs an increase too. In an ideal world banned altogether!!

Sarah, who has asthma, ended up in an induced coma

Never start vaping, says 12-year-old girl with lung damage

Sarah had asthma and was a heavy vaper when she was rushed to hospital with breathing problems.

I don’t understand how they were allowed to exist in the first place. Surely the manufacturers needed to show evidence of their safety before being allowed to sell them?

Look at all the limits on cigarette sales, yet vapes can be seen everywhere.

DustyLee123 · 12/10/2023 07:15

Agree with pp, can’t see how they were ever legal.

Dacadactyl · 12/10/2023 07:15

DDs high school actually did a parents meeting about vaping. I couldn't believe that some of them are made to look like highlighters!

We were told to check their pencil cases and they did a PowerPoint, flashing up the look of them when being disguised.

Think more schools should do that tbh. I had no idea.

MistyMooPup · 12/10/2023 08:04

They can look like anything, littered around the park. Another issue not to derail my own thread is the plastic waste from them. Even amongst adults I’m shocked at the number of people (my brother being one example) that will vape when they’re out but hate smoking and smokers! Doesn’t make sense to me!

They’ve been marketed for children.

So have energy drinks.

The government need to come down hard on the companies who are distributing them.

CaveMum · 12/10/2023 09:16

When you see some of the flavours (or scents or whatever you call them) it's obvious that they are being marketed at children - cotton candy, pink lemonade, etc.

Having read that story about the 12 year old girl with permanent lung damage I'm afraid there are also serious parenting questions to be answered - the girl has been vaping since the age of 9 for goodness sake! My daughter is 9, I don't allow her to go to the shops alone and she certainly doesn't have access to enough money to be buying vapes on a daily basis!

MermaidEyes · 12/10/2023 09:26

You have to be 18 to buy vapes in the UK. Most teens vaping are getting them through older friends or siblings (and parents - yes, really) or disreputable shops that don't care as long as they get a sale. I know several who vape (although they're all over 18) and it's horrible when they're all puffing out nasty strawberry scents right next to you.

notprincehamlet · 12/10/2023 09:28

The top decks of busses seem to be full of vaping children and there seem to be more vape shops on high streets than any other kind of shop. How did we get here??

KirstenBlest · 12/10/2023 09:34

I often see children using vapes. Children probably not in their teens. They are getting them somewhere.
The discarded vapes aren't just plastic, they include an electronic component.

I also see the laughing gas canisters discarded, sometimes boxes of them.

Tessasanderson · 12/10/2023 09:44

Having taken part in chats on here about vaping before i just gave up. I think it was one where we discussed having to put up with the vile smell coming off people vaping.

It ranged between them saying it smelt nice to it didnt smell at all. It was no worse than a air freshner in your home type stuff.

Tbh its got to the point now where those children with parents who dont put a stop to this immediately, well they will have to deal with their own consequences. Its harmfull, its putting fucking chemicals into your own or your kids lungs. Zero sympathy tbh.

Wiccan · 12/10/2023 09:51

I have no sympathy for this mother . Who the fuck is making the rules in her household, the 12 year old daughter ? .
9 year old having access to cash and shops?.
The mother needs to grow a spine and get control . The vape companies need to be accountable but I blame the parents as well .

Sarah2891 · 12/10/2023 09:55

Who was giving this girl vapes at 9?
Bit yes they need to do something about this situation.

MistyMooPup · 12/10/2023 09:59

I think it’s clear from this the damage they can do. Who knows what’s happening in the house but that isn’t the point in reality - it’s a wider issue and this not just happening in this house if 1 in 10 kids vape. It’s going to a much wider issues across lots of families.

The vapes she had already are illegal btw - which also means they had god knows what in them.

A wider issue than what? Its everywhere and we cant just rely on government to do our parenting for us. If people, old or young want to do it there will be a market for it to be supplied. If you are the kind of parent that allows your child to do it, well as i say zero sympathy.

Apparently she was buying them herself so hopefully those shops are being investigated for selling them illegally.

Graciebobcat · 12/10/2023 14:57

Yeah, its ridiculous how it has been allowed to get out of hand, all the stupid flavours, single use vapes and marketing to children and teenagers.

If they are a stop smoking aid then just sell them in a pharmacy. I think I'd trust pharmacists not to sell illegal items to children above random vape shop man.
