Student dc has lost their only debit card (not a scam) - quick solutions while wait for a new card

What can they do while waiting 5 working days for their new card to arrive to pay for things?

I know they can go to their bank branch with ID and get some cash but wondered, if they open a Monzo or similar account would they then be able to use that very quickly in Apple pay?

How long would it take to open something like Monzo?

Apple Pay usually continues to work

happinessischocolate · 11/10/2023 23:20

I've frozen m cards before now when Ive lost them and still used Apple Pay

Dbank · 11/10/2023 23:21

open an Revolute account and add the virtual card to the Apple wallet.

Then transfer some money to the revolute account, should take 15 minutes.

SophiaLaB · 11/10/2023 23:24

Second the above poster Revolute is very simple and quick

Your student DC is presumably an adult an can therefore sort out their own fairly minor problem?

DietrichandDiMaggio · 11/10/2023 23:29

When my son mislaid his wallet, as soon as he'd contacted the bank he was able to add his new card to Apple Pay, so didn't have to wait till the card arrived.

Well presumably he contacted his mum for advice - are adults not allowed to do that?🙄

Middleaugust · 11/10/2023 23:32

Unfortunately dc doesn't have Apple Pay set up. Sounds like Revolut is the way to go then.

Transfer money into your account then withdraw it

No it doesn’t. The new debit card is loaded into Apple Pay before the physical card arrives but that is all. Once you notify the bank of a lost or stolen debit card, it is deactivated in Apple Pay.

I know this because my debit card ends up going through the washing machine every other week and I am constantly needing a new one.

Zippedydoodahday · 11/10/2023 23:33

Chase opens basically straight away and gives you a virtual card to use. Plus you get cashback on regular spending.

This. The wait depends on how long the bank takes to issue you a new card. Usually it is within 24hrs.

Odfod. Some people do still help out their kids even though they are adults whether it’s minor or not

My DS is a college student. He's 16 so not an adult.

I'm with lloyds bank and when I've been waiting for a new card I've been able to get the details from the bank app and put them into Google pay to use from there.

Stop being a dick.

ActDottie · 11/10/2023 23:46

Are his card details on the banking app? You can then just copy these manually into Apple Pay and use that. I don’t even know where my card is… somewhere in the house not stolen/lost but I barely use it.

God alive, who rattled your cage?

What adults can't help out other adults? or their children, regardless?

Did you never ask your parents for advice in adulthood?

Middleaugust · 11/10/2023 23:57

@SirSamVimesCityWatch student dc is extremely capable and is very much a fully-functioning adult but has a lot on tomorrow/this week and I am helping them out with this, just as they help me out with things when they are at home, or just as I might help dp (who is very much an adult too...) Also, unsurprisingly student dc doesn't have the mine of info and advice that is most mumsnetters, other than the odd snipey one.

OP posts:

They could only see the account number - don't think the card is logged on it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/10/2023 00:05

I got a chase account and could see the card details very quickly, as they're in the app rather than on a physical card. They do send a card but I was able to use it before that. And it integrates with Google pay very easily.

MMBaranova · 12/10/2023 00:10

You can do a same day cash pick-up transfer within the UK at a Post Office that offers 'MoneyGram'. Recipient needs Driving Licence or Passport level ID.

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 12/10/2023 00:17

Chase, Kroo, Monzo, Starling - all quick to open online with digital cards. Metro quick to open in person and they issue the debit card immediately.

Comefromaway · 12/10/2023 00:35

If either of you or another close relative banks with Nat west you can get a code (either via the phone or online banking) to get cash from the atm.
