Hi everyone just after some advice l, my son is 17 been in college over a year he's on his level 3 course. Passed level 2 an English. He has a few sen snuggles. The college have said he won't pass this course and what him to move to another college, is this allowed. He is dyslexic. since going back He had no support no apps on his school laptop to support him, I've only just been made aware of this. His attendance and punctuation are perfect along with everything else. He just sturggles to get info on paper. Is the college allowed to remove him from the course?

Does he have an EHCP? If he does, it will specify what support he should be getting. If he isn’t able to meet the requirements of the course, maybe the college feels he would be better suited to a different one, that it sounds as though they don’t offer, hence suggesting another college.

He's college age now, they dial back the mollycoddling ime. They will expect him to find out about and install his own apps.

I was slightly shocked at the difference because no one told us until quite a way into the first term of a levels. My biology teacher said to us, are you not going home and doing further reading and self learning? You are not in school now, these are not gcse's. We were like no, no one told us we should be. So they will have different expectations of what he should be doing himself now.

It's a bit late this far into term in his second year to be saying he won't pass.
How did he get on last year? If they had told you this in June it might have been reasonable, but to leave it this late is not in my opinion.

I would get on to learning support / SEN team urgently.

Is it a BTEC or T-Level? How did he get on with English Language GCSE?

DD1 was supported for a while by showing her structure to learning support before she wrote assignments to ensure she had the right topics covered, and we also printed out the unit specs so she could cross reference what was needed.
Sometimes I asked her questions on the assignment topic to help extract all the info she knew, but had missed writing, so she could then bullet extra points to include.

What level course is it? For dyslexia they get extra time in exams but that's about it, my dd is dyslexic she got 25% extra in extras plus a tutor assigned she could go to for specific support. She got A*aab at a level. She didn't get special apps etc

Can he sourse a private tutor?
A tutor might steer him into making the adjustment to completing work and motivating himself.

Ah. I've just re read.
Last year he was on the Level 2 course which he passed (with what grade?) and he re-sat his English Language and passed. (DD2's college you have to get a Merit to be allowed onto the next level up).

So this year is a step up and he is struggling.

They shouldn't have let him on to the L3 course if he wasn't capable.
The rest of my advice / suggestions above still stands.

He can't put apps on the laptop himself as you need a code, with it being a laptop, on their website they do say they will help all young people with any sen support that is needed.
