When to stop buying presents?

I am close to my ex's sister who has 5DC. They are aged 14-23. They still call me their auntie, as I have always been in their lives even though I'm no longer with their uncle. I see them probably a couple of times a year (they live far away). Ex never really bothers and hasn't seen them in years so they are closer to me if anything and we all value the relationship.

I always give the kids some money each for their birthday but obviously with 5 of them it does add up!

So, at what age do you stop giving birthday money to friends' children/ nephews/ nieces etc?

I can't just give it to the 14 year old but not the 23 year old so I feel I have to carry on until the youngest is 18 but that's quite a long time off yet! And giving money to someone in their mid 20's feels a bit weird.

Not sure what to do?

You should have stopped giving them money as soon as they turned 18. The way you propose is unfair as the 14 year old will receive less money than the eldest!

I stopped when they reached early twenties, had finushed uni/ in work.
Students/ apprentices/ workers earning min wage for age 21 and under still defintely appreciate birthday and xmas money.

To add i did continue birthday money for youngest DN when i stopped given to eldest DN ( did feel a bit weird / mean tbh!) but still gave all DNs xmas presents

We do presents until they leave university or get a proper job. Unless they use this as an opportunity to start buying presents back.

You definitely can’t stop them all at the same time as that is very unfair on the youngest! My aunts switched to a small box of chocs when we got to 18 and kept giving money to the younger ones. You’re too late for 18, but can do that at 23, or maybe 25 is more of a milestone?

RainCloudsInTheSky · 11/10/2023 17:29

Just tell them anyone over 18 no longer gets money and just a card. You can’t keep on doing that. It’s madness.

I wanted to stop at 18.

My DC are older than my numerous nieces and nephews but my siblings kept giving money until 21.

So, I'm stopping at 21.
