Air fryers and agas.

So I'm seeing lots of air fryer deals on Amazon.
We have an aga which we turn on nov-April.

Do I need a air fryer as well as the aga or does it do pretty much the same thing??

I feel I'm missing out on the trend!
We also have a fan oven that i use during the summer months.

What do you cook with when the aga is off? Or do you have a second normal oven? As the Aga is just on in winter the air fryer wont save you energy as you will be using it in addition.

LittleMrsPretty · 10/10/2023 21:25

Also you dont need to wait for aga to heat up? So whats the benefit of your airfryer will you just use it in Summer?

also why cant you keep the Aga on all year round.

i have an oven and Airfryer but gree up with a Aga and no other second oven?

isn't it expensive to run an oven and an Aga? Could you get rid of your oven and use the Aga and air fryer. Why is the Aga only on in winter? How do you get hot water without the Aga on in Summer?

We have a fan oven that I use in the summer months.

He aga doesn't heat our water and we turn it off for two reasons.
South facing kitchen that gets ridiculously hot in the summer.

It is gas and was expensive to run continuously throughout the year.

No, Aga's are always at full heat.

No they're not, you have to adjust the heating if you're cooking a big meal and want it all cooked quickly. Otherwise you can let it have a lower level burn rate.

We also have a gas aga and no air fryer. We've been renovating a property that had an aga, so only used it a few months before turning it off. Also have an electric oven for when the aga is off.

So far this summer though, we've used the BBQ or the oven rarely. IF you eat lots of oven cooked types foods in summer, then an air fryer might be cheaper to run. In the winter when the aga is on- I would never use an airfryer! I'm already paying the gas to heat the aga, so no way would I pay to also use an airfryer.

Having lived with an Aga for almost 20 years, I can categorically state I've never had to do that! The temperature is left alone and the aga is always ready to use. I imagine if you were to use the hotplate for hours on end cooking jam and then tried to cook Yorkshire puddings you might have an issue. But otherwise, countless Sunday roasts would say just leave alone!

If you’re on Instagram, Hannah at giftpopboutique has an aga and an air fryer. She isn’t a cookery account but shares loads of recipes. She doesn’t have another oven though.

I have an Aga and an air fryer. But my Aga is the "unconventional" one where it's run off gas. I can 100% say since I got the air fryer in May I haven't used my Aga once. In fact, I use one of the ovens to store the air fryers bits snd bobs in. I now refer to the Aga as the air fryers bitch.

It probably depends on fuel type. Ours is solid fuel so you really need to stoke it up like a steam train for Xmas dinner.

Bleepbloopbluurp · 11/10/2023 06:34

I have the same set up as you OP, albeit the Aga uses oil.

I use the air fryer for things I want to be crispy, such as oven chips, as I find the Aga doesn't do those terribly well.
In summer I use the air fryer if there is something small I want to make but it is a waste to heat up the main oven.
The air fryer gets less use than I had hoped. I went through a phase of trying to cook things in it and for me the outcome often wasn't as good as the oven.

BabyStopCryin · 11/10/2023 06:49

My sister used both. Sorry that’s not very helpful but she is a really good cook.

Zampa · 11/10/2023 07:02

I want to get my Dad an air fryer for Christmas. He has an AGA in a small semi and in the summer, the heat is unbearable. I'm hoping that this purchase might encourage him to turn it off in the summer. However I think buying him one might be a touch selfish.

sashh · 11/10/2023 07:13

I have a very small air fryer, I live alone and it must save me a fortune in fuel. It depends what you cook.

I love salmon don in the slow cooker, I put it skin side up with a little oil, it cooks in half the time it would take to fry and I can put some potatoes in at the same time.

Anything you would put in the oven can go in the air fryer.

I actually bought one for my dad and he has started to use it.

TeaEnthusiast · 11/10/2023 07:46

In the summer when our Aga is off, we kept forgetting to allow time for the companion oven to get to temperature. So we got an air fryer and have used it lots. I think we will continue to use it for some things when the aga is back on, really glad we got it.

LittleMrsPretty · 11/10/2023 13:49

@Parakeetamol
@Crunched
I know that an Aga is just on and you dont have to wait for it to heat up hence the confusion over why an airfryer would be needed.

just keep the aga on and dave the money from using the oven and airfryer.
