Anyone else experience the same? Having to do more of a top up shop.

Are you trying to spend the same and running out of food because it's more expensive? My weekly shop lasts the week as it always has because I buy the right amount of food but it's more expensive than it used to be

heartbroken22 · 10/10/2023 11:34

It might be that!

How much are you spending and what did you spend before?

Do you meal plan? That way you shouldn't run out unless you change your mind about what you want to eat!

MuggleMe · 10/10/2023 11:38

I've gone from 60-80-100 in a couple of years.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/10/2023 11:42

Well either you're not buying enough food for the week, or someone is eating more than is planned for.

Obviously it's not possible to make the same amount of money go as far as it did a year or as things cost more than they did then.

I meal plan and try to stick to it so my top up shop is usually bread, milk, fresh fruit/veg and anything I have somehow forgotten.

My shopping is about 60% more expensive than it was pre pandemic.

mindutopia · 10/10/2023 11:53

The only thing that I find doesn't last the week is fruit and snacks, because the kids and all their friends seem to eat through them like locusts. Otherwise, I actually find lately we have too many leftovers and it's hard to work through them all (dh doesn't always remember to have them for lunch). We meal plan and I order all shopping online. We do a couple top up shots a week, but it's for totally unnecessary stuff, like biscuits or after school snacks if out.

We do a general meal plan but not exact, eg I buy 7 dinners and 7 lunches worth of stuff but there's flexibility in which veg goes with which meal. But it does last a week, and I rarely need to top up (we store bread in fridge and buy filtered milk so it lasts all week, we get a range of fruit/veg and use up the stuff that goes off first). Our weekly shop is £200pw for a family of 5, a lot higher than pre-pandemic but we had one toddler then, now we have a 5 yo and a toddler, and life is busier so I'm doing less cooking from scratch.

£200 a week!! We're three adults and spend about £120.

FrenchandSaunders · 10/10/2023 12:24

Sometimes 4

RowenaEllis · 10/10/2023 12:27

I spend £100-120 for 2 adults, a teenage boy and two animals

DiscoBeat · 10/10/2023 12:56

It's a lot - over £200 a week (2 adults and 2 teens - one a gym fanatic on a high protein diet). Also includes cooked lunches every day as well as evening meals and cleaning products. It all adds up- we get through a ridiculous amount of fresh berries, veg and herbs, nice coffee etc. Wine at the weekends and we entertain fairly frequently. Kids like to bake a lot. We do have a vegetarian meal a couple of times a week.

Ours never lasts. We’re all greedy fuckers and eat everything within a few days. 🙈😆 I’ve learnt to buy things every 2/3 days instead as it means I actually spend less as I’m only buying the things I need / will eat for those days.
