5 generations.....

I was listening to an interview with the journalist Lewis Goodall and he said that the first time he appeared in the media was in his local paper as a baby, pictured with the 5 living generations of his family. Now I find that amazing- I come from a family with huge gaps in the generations- my ds's great, great grandfather was born in 1830! Can anyone go back further than that?

My family have small gaps between generations, and we got a photo of 5 generations when I had my first daughter with me, my mum, my granny and my great-grannie. Just had my second daughter and great-great-grannie is still going strong at 99.

I’m the same as the poster above. We have very close gaps in our family.

There’s a family picture of my children, myself, my mum, my grandma and my great grandma. My great grandma just passed away at 90 but luckily she was able to meet both of my children😁

A relative of mine was also in the paper for the same reason. The mother was 17, her mother was in her late 30s, the great grandmother would have been 50/60s, and the great great grandmother 70/80s.

There are several women in my extended family (and DPs too) who have become grandmothers before they were 40.

@CurlewKate, I would have been able to top that, with a great grandfather born in 1819, right at the end of the reign of George III, but then I did a DNA test and found he wasn't my great grandfather at all!

We have 4 generations. My kids (teens), me (40s), my parents (70s) my Nan (90s) her mum and dad weren't in the picture much and she grew up in children's homes, but I'd guess they would have been born in the 1900s/1910s

I think mine would be about the same on the maternal side. My parents were born in the 1920s, and my grandparents in the 1880s and 1890s. My own children were born when I was late 30s and early 40s. Their great grandparents were born around the 1820s-30s.

The paternal side was a bit less spaced out, because my father was one of the older (of 8 surviving) siblings. His father was one of the older (of 19 surviving) siblings!

19 surviving siblings! Wow!

There are very large age gaps in my family on the paternal side so my Grandfather was born in the 1880s, my great grandfather in the 1840s, when Queen Victoria was a young woman.

I am under 60. Five generations could just take me back to the 18th century. Astonishing thought.

Also a fascinating thread, Thanks OP

My maternal great grandparents were alive until I was about 7/8years old. Remember them well.
My mum had about 7 years of great grandmother hood but sadly had dementia for much of it.
Sadly never met my paternal grandparents, both died before I was born. Never even seen a photo of them x

We had 5 generations of girls until very recently when my great grandmother sadly passed away. We took yearly photos of my daughter, myself, my mother, my grandmother, and my great grandmother as a group!

We all married young, all had daughters, and obviously had pretty close age gaps. I knew all of us being girls was pretty weird, but I didn't think the number of generations was so unusual until I saw this post!
