Anyone know how to help heartburn/burning sensation in throat when not allowed any omeprozole type products?

I’ve got an endoscopy and colonoscopy on the 20th which means I have to stop taking any products that help with my stomach for two weeks.

I have very uncomfortable pain because of it, but I also have terrible heartburn and a burning sensation in my throat. Obviously can’t take any gaviscon products as I’m supposed to allow my symptoms but it’s awful.

im planning on giving the doctors a call in the morning to see what they suggest, but any one here have any help?

Fizzy water works for me. I've heard mixing fizzy with milk helps, but that would make me sick. 😂

Soubriquet · 09/10/2023 21:38

Yeah that would make me sick too tbh. Fizzy stuff is a no go at the moment. I’m currently drinking flat pop

Bicarbonate of Soda works if you can stomach it (no pun intended). Its good if you have nothing else in. You need something alkaline to neutralise the acid. Alka Seltzer works well too, but get the original rather than extra as that has paracetamol in IIRC.

Change your diet. No coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol, tomatoes, onions, garlic, citrus fruit, or dairy

Slippery elm??

Thisismynewusername1 · 09/10/2023 21:45

Have you specifically asked if you can take rennies etc? They are basically neutralise the acid as pp describes.

Gaviscon is similar though as it forms a layer that helps stop the acid refluxing into your oesophagus. So if you can’t take that it sounds like you’re supposed to suffer and allow damage to happen so they can assess it?

anything you try or any suggestions to relieve symptoms will help, which is counter to what the dr’s want? So I wouldn’t take anything without asking first.

Pretty much. I’m gonna give the doctors a call in the morning to see if I can take anything whilst waiting, but I think they want the damage to happen to see how it affects me. I recently had an 8 day hospital stay to a sudden array of infections which is why I need the two exams.

I was allowed Gaviscon, just not PPIs for mine. Definitely check.

3AndADog · 09/10/2023 22:20

I was allowed gaviscon but not ppi too and they saw damage

sunshinesupermum · 09/10/2023 22:38

I was allowed Gaviscon during the week before the endoscopy.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/10/2023 22:42

Glass of Andrews? I can't seem to find it lately but I swear by it for so many things (heartburn, trapped wind, constipation)

Milkand2sugarsplease · 09/10/2023 22:56

Polo mints and lots of them!!

picturethispatsy · 09/10/2023 23:01

Deep belly/abdominal breathing. Sounds weird but helps.

ScribblingPixie · 09/10/2023 23:01

Slippery elm - put a spoonful of powder in a pan, mix it to a paste, add boiling water and stir it cooking for a few mins until it goes all gelatinous. Let it cool down quite a bit before you drink it. It protects the lining of your oesophagus. Drink it several times a day.

QueenofTheSlipstreamVM · 09/10/2023 23:08

I was allowed gaviston.. sleep on as many pillows as you can.. so you are propped up and not laid flat helps with GERD.
I've had many colonoscopies and endoscopy.
It's the liquid sachets for laxative you mix with gallons of water l found the worst.

J316 · 09/10/2023 23:15

I second bicarbonate of soda, half a tea spoon in a little water. Sipping peppermint tea throughout the day can help too.

Can I ask what the follow up to this is?
Will it heal? Is it anything to worry about?

whatausername · 10/10/2023 04:50

Milk gives some people a degree of relief, depends on severity I imagine.

WanderingWitches · 10/10/2023 05:52

I was allowed famotidine, just not the PPI

3AndADog · 10/10/2023 07:06

I had gastritis and duodenitis, which healed with a course of double dose ppi. I also have a hiatus hernia which can only be fixed by surgery, i am I decided yet. I still have flare ups and I go straight in with the high dose omeprazole. No one seemed remotely concerned by what was seen. I hope it goes well for you

InterFactual · 10/10/2023 07:13

A handful of green leafy veg like spinach is supposed to be as good as rennies for neutralising acid.
