What are the life changing things you've done?

Things that have had a big positive impact? Not children/marriage etc, but things that maybe didn't seem that big but have had a big impact.

I've made a few changes lately, but feel there's more work to do. I've got some money to throw at it if that's needed, but they could be big or small.

For me, the best ones have been a decision to say yes to almost everything and buying an Eufy robovac 😆

Taken my bipolar type 1 seriously and am on the right medication combination.
Since 1st July I have joined the gym and do weight training 5 days a week.
This is me time.
I've also been watching my eating and eating healthier and have lost nearly 4 stone now.
I journal everyday and am learning to accept that taking care off myself is just as important as anything else.

bonbon2023 · 09/10/2023 20:42

@WitchyFingers yep and was never pulled over once 😱 mental.

SusanSHelit · 09/10/2023 20:43

Getting a cat and lots of lovely leafy plants. Especially discount half dead plants and coaxing them back to life.

Getting ds a TV for his playroom. He and I can now watch our very different things in peace.

Getting adhd diagnosis and finding myriad coping strategies, including accepting that sometimes I just can't do stuff the way neurotypical people do

Heatherbell1978 · 09/10/2023 20:49

Not sure about life changing yet but earlier this year I decided to stop spending money on crap I don't need - clothes for me despite having loads, random bits for the house, fancy clothes for kids (Boden etc), just stuff...honestly I've saved so much money in a relatively short period of time and genuinely don't feel like I miss anything.

Oh and getting to grips with pensions (sorry money related as well!). I spent time really understanding what we had, what we need and how much we need to save. I feel in control of money again which I like.

Just need to get fitness on track...

KStockHERO · 09/10/2023 20:55

Started boxing training. Not bullshit boxercise, boxing. In a sweaty, male-dominated gym with men you'd cross the M6 to avoid. I can't describe how much this has changed my life.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/10/2023 20:55

HRT
Taking an outdoor exercise class...in all weathers with the best bunch of women and forming friendships I never thought I'd have.
Taking up running
Stopping drinking. Seemed fairly major at the time but now I don't really think about it.

Readingineading · 09/10/2023 21:00

Well, emigrating .... but not achievable or desirable for all.
Getting a dog.
Leaving a nasty, toxic work environment.

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 09/10/2023 21:08

Becoming a nurse. Loosing 5 stone. Getting fitter and toned.
All after my 50th birthday.

SkyFullofStars1975 · 09/10/2023 21:19

Going low/no contact with my sister was the best thing that I've ever done. She is the most spiteful and toxic person that I've ever had the misfortune to meet, and whilst acknowledging that our Mum is upset by it, I don't regret it. At all. She may be related to me, but that's all we have in common.

I feel calmer, happier and it's incredibly liberating to just not care anymore.

FLEXoneyoz · 09/10/2023 21:29

Really great thread. Reading and learning. Thanks all

Lived abroad for a few years. Massively opened my mind to other possibilities and other types of life, as well as giving me some of the best friends I ever had. Not sure I'd have made those kind of friendships if I'd just stayed doing the 9 to 5 in Britain.

Taken up puppy raising for guide dogs - it's very rewarding and a good feeling to know I've made a difference to several people's lives.

Ahh this is just lovely, well done you!

It takes every bit of determination for me to not pounce on the adorable guide puppy being trained near me! I know she’s in training & would never ever interfere but my word, she’s so lovely! The lady training is doing a wonderful job, as are you.

PosyPrettyToes · 09/10/2023 22:07

My dog - she makes my heart squeeze every time I look at her little fluffy face.
Kicked the seven shades of shit out of my would-be rapist then testified again him.
learned to be honest about not being ok.

If you are thinking of working out with dumbbells, there's no better than Caroline Girvan. Start here:

Thanks for this

Nicole1111 · 09/10/2023 22:14

Self esteem work. Overcoming low self esteem is a brilliant book and on the nhs recommended

You drove for 18 years without a licence?! What the fuck?!

This is far more common than most people realise!

Became a Samaritan. It truly changed me as a person. I'm not in a brick branch as such, so the way our team bonds is very different, I speak to people face to face. When I had to quit work I kept it on and it was the piece of me I managed to maintain. Even now I'm in a less people-facing role, when I do go back to work, these are the skills that will help.

Please can you explain more about this?

At least PPs have mentioned weight lifting. I don't lift weights as such, but I work out almost daily with quite heavy dumbbells - courtesy of Caroline Girvan on YouTube. Truly life-changing for a nearly 70 year old Granny 😎- I highly recommend it.*

I found this - and many other suggestions on here super inspirational. This especially because I’ve just turned 60. I’m amazed at the mental battle of ‘being old’ I’m so very proud of all the trailblazers like you that are proving anything over 50 isn’t ancient.
I’ve just looked up Caroline Girvan, and gosh! Well, I’ll give it a go, if it works for you I’m game.
I’m suddenly losing a lot of strength , feeling aches and depressed. I need to re evaluate my life, marriage, all of it. Working on stopping booze after a particular stressful time it had crept up. Already feel better.
great thread!

bert3400 · 09/10/2023 22:37

Moving overseas - my stress levels have decreased 💯. My DS14 can be out being a teenager without me worrying about what will happen to him .

Which bit? I volunteer for Festival Branch so our work is face to face at large events, music festivals and rallies, a few sporting events. Nowadays I'm more support for fellow vols. Starting it just put people in my life I'd never have met, we're an odd family 😂, I've spoken to people I'd never have spoken to, . I grew a different layer to my onion.

AutumnAuntie · 09/10/2023 22:44

Going on holiday on my own.
Getting laser eye surgery.
Getting my moles checked out.
Having CBT (probably number one).
