Is a 2 hour commute too much?

It’s 1:35 (3 days a week) but I’m over estimating with travel.

It’s for a company I’d love to work for but that amount of travelling is off putting.

I did it in my twenties. Made me depressed. Never again.

I occasionally did it, like once a month, once I'd had kids and it was really really stressful as I have no family back up and trains etc are unreliable!

I wouldn't personally even consider it.

I did it for a while.
2 hour commute each way with 1 hour of that on train where I could read or catch up on some work.

Couldn't have done it without support at home as children drop off/pick up had to be done by partner and I wasn't back until late so he was doing evening meal I I just did bedtime routine.

i did it for 3 years as let me get a job that meant we could afford to have ds2. unfortunately the extra workload for partner ended up being one of the things he couldn't handle and we split up.

I do 75 minutes each way 5 days a week. Ie 2.5 hours a day 5 days a week.

I'm not sure what the point of your post is really but can affirm I haven't died from the commute and if you want the job you'll adjust to the commute within about 4 weeks.

I wouldn't do it unless it was an absolute dream job or a guaranteed step to a dream job or a much better paid job. Just not worth it and it'll have a huge impact on your life to have an extra 10-12 hours taken up travelling. If it was very temporary I might also consider it but it's so limiting to having any kind of life for those days.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 09/10/2023 23:09

I would only consider it under a few conditions:

  • the money was great
  • I could pick and choose my two days in (barring important meetings)
  • there was door to door public transport
  • I could be reasonably confident it would lead to a more convenient position

Long commutes are so tiring, I did it pre-kids, the only way I could do it was if I could nap on the way there and back. I wouldn't do it now I have kids, unless it was a short-term secondment.

It’s remote so I’d have to drive otherwise it would be a train then a bus which I wouldn’t want to do.

It's a very personal choice. For me, a 90 minute-2 hour commute is too long. Far too long. Other people would be fine doing that.

DramaAlpaca · 10/10/2023 21:30

I used to do that (on a bad day, on a good day it would be 90 minutes) when I worked in central London. It was awful, I hated it. My commute now is ten minutes.

TemporarilyshyAF · 11/10/2023 07:22

Is that each way? Door to door or car park some distance away/ central park and ride? I did it by train (London to Sussex but 2hr door to door) for 2 yrs.

Does the salary very much make it worth your while and then some, with job options outside this if it becomes too much or would you be backing yourself into a corner with a high salary and big commitments 2hrs away with no equivalent jobs locally? All things to consider. Personally, never again. But then, I was doing a lot of travel as part of a LDR too and my salary didn't really make it worthwhile however much I loved the coast and the prospects were great. Also consider the commute itself. 1 train and a quick walk either end vs several changes or an easy vs a stressful drive. It makes a difference.

For some people it would be fine especially if high salary, shorter hours, simple logistics or close ties to place they live but it can honestly not be. You will probably have a honeymoon period when you move/ move jobs. Especially if doing so for reasons such as a nicer house or setting or an interesting job. Don't make any hard-to-reverse decisions during this time as reality can be different.

It really depends what's going on at home, what support you'll have and whether you have kids and what age they are.
I did 2 hrs each way for 5 days before I had children.
It was manageable and I actually enjoyed the commute (train parties etc) but husband heavily supported at home as it was tiring. But only you know what you'll be getting home to. Good luck with your decision.
