Why do things seem worse at night?

I'm not talking big scary things, just minor things.

We had a new bathroom fitted 6 months ago. The mirrored cabinet on the wall has 3 doors. The middle one is ever so slightly off centre in that it hangs a fraction lower than the other 2. Ordinarily this doesn't bother me. Tonight, I have just spent half an hour opening and closing it, trying to work out why it sits this way and am now questioning whether I should be getting someone out to look at it. I know that, come morning, I will stand in front of it to brush my teeth and not really give it much thought.

Why does night time bring out the irrational thoughts and worries?

Good question. Maybe because we have more time to think when things slow down at night?

That IS a good question.
I'm a big night-time worrier. Awake from 3:45 this a.m running through 20 min sessions of worry about DD2. I think its a lack of distractions? Maybe that in the night there's very little I can action to help her? So anxiety levels creep up?
Feels more hard-wired though...something hormonal?

I might be wrong but I think serotonin levels dip in the night.

It’s an evolutionary thing to do with losing our sense of sight in the dark.
Our prehistoric ancestors had to be on higher alert at night for predators/attackers/wild beasts etc so we have evolved to be more scared/vigilant at night.
That’s why everything seems so much worse at night.
We are modern humans with a prehistoric brain! There’s loads of research on it online.

No idea but 4am seems to be my trigger time to wake in a panic over minor things. So annoying.

Is your cupboard soft close hinges? They should have screws which adjust the way the doors hang so you could fix it yourself.

I'm the opposite! My menopausal symptoms mean that I am hit with the most awful anxiety in the morning when I wake up, and by afternoon I'm better. Darkness doesn't help when you are feeling on edge already though, and this time of year is tough as it's getting daker noticeably earlier.

Some very interesting points! Needless to say I didn't even look at the cabinet today! But I may have a look at the hinges!
