Where would you stay in the Peak District?

I’m looking to go away to the Peak District for a few days.
Where would you advise me to? Any places you have to go and visit?

(Not walking as I’m in a wheelchair)

In all honesty, I wouldn’t go to the Peak District in the autumn if I was limited to using a wheelchair! go to a city where there’s plenty of accessible indoor attractions.

I’d consider Baslow as you have Chatsworth just down the road and a choice of places to eat. You’re also not far from Bakewell and Eyam (the plague village - has a good museum). I don’t know about wheelchair-accessible paths, though.

DawsonWins · 08/10/2023 20:59

@NotFastButFurious things are bit more complex than that.
We’re going with my parents that don’t want to be in a town.
Dh and two young adults dcs that love the countryside and walking.

So the best compromise is me visiting small villages with my parents. And DH+dcs either coming with us or going for a walk on their own.

If it was me, I’d go to Edinburgh instead 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Eyam isn't very wheelchair accessible, unless it's quite a tough chair and powered. There are some big hills.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 08/10/2023 21:02

Sheffield is a short drive from the peak district, and has loads to do.
When I stay there with my friend, we drive there for walks and it doesn't take long at all.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 08/10/2023 21:03

Triple point brewery is worth a visit, anyway

BatteryPoweredMammy · 08/10/2023 21:06

Pootle around Castleton?
I don't know if any of the blue John mines are wheelchair accessible but DH and the kids might enjoy them?

Terrifyingface · 08/10/2023 21:11

A while ago but we stayed in Tideswell a few years back with DH’s Nan and it had good walks but also a nice town to meander around with her.

Does anyone know Buxton?

Bakewell is nice and I got around fine with a pram.
Also Chatsworth house is amazing. Even if the house inside isn't accessible, the gardens and the outside courtyard is great.

Bobbybobbins · 08/10/2023 21:41

Buxton is nice and places like Castleton not too far

Sandsnake · 08/10/2023 21:42

I love Castleton. Between high and low peak so fairly central for everything. Also, it has five pubs! Couple of nice restaurants too.

DawsonWins · 08/10/2023 21:43

That’s all very helpful. Thank you.

Ive come across tte Heights of Abraham. The cable car is wheelchair accessible too. Has anyone done it?

Buxton fab but cold and can be very wet( highest Uk Market Town) it is accessible around the lovely park and shops ( sadly not as good as they were) . Spa is great but not accessible as on lots of levels . It is a steep climb up the slopes to higher market place in Buxton so take some care where you stay. Lots of disused railways in the Peak ( Tissington trail, High Peak trail , Monsal trail ) that are now cycleways so lots of opportunity to access see the scenery or hire accessible accessible vehicles. Chatsworth gardens great and accessible . Reservoirs like the Goyt, Howden/ Ladybower can be steeper but accessible

coronafiona · 08/10/2023 21:47

I love heights of Abraham. The cars don't stop for you to get in so you might have to ask for them to stop it to get a ramp into the car. At the top there are some flat bits and some hills with narrows paths you can only access on foot. You would be able to go into the mine, it is concreted and wide but it it dark and cold so go prepared.
