What to say in resignation letter

my partner and I run a business together him more than me. While is was slow and not very busy I took on a Sunday job which I love I’ve been doing it six months. The business is now really busy and I’m working 6 days a week. Im chronically ill too and exhausted so I need to leave the Sunday job. I’m an over worker and should have left 2 months ago but I know they need me and enjoy the work I do. What’s should I say in my resignation letter. I also need to put on my big girl pants and put myself first.

I would just say that you would like to tender your resignation to commit more time to your own business. Say you have enjoyed working there and wish them all the best for the future. You are overthinking this, it doesn't have to be long and you don't need to feel guilty about resigning.

However lovely your weekend job employers are, you don't actually owe them anything. Your letter doesn't need to be lengthy.

Dear (Name)

I am writing to give you my contractual (insert notice period) notice of my resignation from my post as (job title). My last day of employment will be (date).

I have greatly enjoyed working here and have learned a lot. However, as you know I have been combining this employment with working for my own unrelated business during the week, and that work has become so much busier recently due to successful growth that I no longer have time to combine it with a second employment.

Many thanks for the opportunities I have had while working for (employer name) and best wishes for the future.

Yours sincerely

Well I wrote one last year after 15 years and mine just said
As of today's date I am giving you 4 weeks notice as per my contract and will be leaving on such and such date.

Why do you need to embellish and give a reason. You will be forgotten before you've taken your coat off when you get home.

Keep it polite and simple.

I tend to include the contractual notice, last date of employment and, if appropriate, a sincere thank you for my time there and best wishes.

Exactly this. Just the date you are leaving. No explanations, apologies or excuses are required. Keep it as simple as possible.

You don't have to give a reason.
I never have.

Kimten · 08/10/2023 16:49

I agree that they'll have forgotten just you as soon as you step out of the workplace for the last time.
You owe them nothing.

‘I hereby wish to give the required 1 weeks notice of my intention to leave the employment of x pub.

This.

I’ve never written more than ‘please except this as notice of my resignation. My last working day will be X’.

Just keep the letter factual but also tell them the decision in person and add the bits about enjoying the job etc when you speak to them
